I’ve been reading about YouTube redesigning its TV app to improve the viewing experience and compete with other streaming platforms… and all the hype about how now we can put out our own TV shows without a network… mmm yes and no. 🤓 Sure, fewer gatekeepers mean we can get ideas out faster, maybe even with less compromise. But here’s the reality. The basics of storytelling don’t change. Great content still starts with a strong idea and solid execution, no matter where it’s shown. I’ve been working on sizzle reels for over 15 years. This is the moment where, if you can sell the idea, you know you can put anything out there, no matter the show. Sizzles have taught me a lot about conveying a concept with just the basics. If you want to get good at editing, producing, or writing, start small. Don’t overwhelm yourself with big projects. Streamer: I don't know why I'm not growing a following. Me: What does your day to day look like? Streamer: I stream every single day for 8 hours a day. Me: For how many viewers on average? Streamer: 0-2, it's usually just myself Me: Are you posting clips anywhere? Streamer: No, I don't have time for that. Me: So you don't have time to grow, got it. Stop streaming DAILY full time. Start with ONE stream per week until you find out how to PRODUCE your content from those streams.

Aside from the obvious (i.e. does anyone still think the whole "YouTube isn't premium" argument holds water when people are spending this much time with it?), my two takeaways from the latest EMARKETER data are: 1. YouTube is the clear leader in monetizable TV inventory, and is *just* skirting the line in terms of showing too many ads. Looks like the right balance to me, but should be weary of crossing that ad load line. 2. Netflix is a sleeping giant. For those outside the USA we might not know a lot about TUBI. well, it has 250000 films and TV episodes and for free !! It is trying to be Netflix and YouTube in one go. they have 80 million monthly viewers. they claim to have a business model that is very promising compared to all other streamers and TV competitors.
