Did you know we measure trees much like we measure humans for sewing clothes? Ever wondered how we measure trees? It all starts with DBH (Diameter at Breast Height), typically measured at 1.3 meters above ground level. This standardized method helps ensure consistent data collection across studies and locations. 📏 Once we have the DBH, we can calculate the tree's basal area and estimate its volume, which are crucial for forest management and ecological research. But it doesn't stop there! 🔍 To get a more comprehensive understanding, we measure the diameter at the base and at the top of the tree. This provides insights into its growth patterns and structural stability. 🛠️ Various instruments are used for accurate measurements, including diameter tapes, calipers, and laser rangefinders. These tools allow us to gather precise data essential for sustainable forestry practices and environmental conservation. 🌿 Next time you stroll through a forest, take a moment to appreciate the science behind these towering giants and the meticulous methods used to understand and protect them . #Forestry #TreeMeasurement #Ecology #Conservation #Science #linkedln

🌲 Happy National Forest Week! This year's theme, Two-Eyed Seeing, emphasizes the importance of integrating Traditional Knowledge with Western Science for sustainable forest management. By considering both perspectives, we can ensure the sustainable management of our forests for future generations. GIS is a powerful tool that helps make this collaboration possible. One way is through land-use planning, which considers Indigenous and biodiversity values in addition to economic opportunities. By leveraging GIS for informed decision-making, we can successfully manage our forests if we approach planning with a focus on tradition and technology. #NationalForestWeek #TwoEyedSeeing #GIS #Sustinability #Forestry #LandUsePlanning #IndigenousKnowledge #ForestManagement

Hello! I’m Adeola Glory, a student at FUTA. Here goes. My journey into forestry has been full of surprises. Originally, I aimed for a career in pharmacy, but when that didn’t work out, I applied for biochemistry instead. To my surprise, FUTA offered me Forestry. My first thought was, “Forestry?” “What is forestry? Am I really going to study bushes?” At first, I considered switching to another course in my second year, but as I explored forestry, I realized it was much more than just trees. It’s a vibrant field with endless opportunities! One aspect that truly captivates me is Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This powerful technology allows us to analyze and map forest data, helping us monitor forest health and manage resources effectively. As environmental challenges grow, skills in GIS are becoming increasingly essential. I’m also passionate about sustainable forestry. I believe in a future where our forests can meet human needs while preserving resources for generations to come. I’m glad I stuck to forestry. Is there something you wanted to change but changed your mind afterwards? If this is your first time reading my post, let’s connect and get to know each other in the comments. #forestry #sustainability #GIS #environmentalscience

🌲 TANABBO II saves the spruce forests We are excited to announce the publication of our latest study "Spruce Bark Beetle Phenological Modelling and Drought Risk within the Framework of the TANABBO II Model", published in Ecological Modelling. This research provides important insights for sustainable forest management, notably the protection of spruce forests from the increasing threat of bark beetles under changing climate conditions. ☝ Recent outbreaks of the spruce bark beetle in the Czech Republic and Europe have led to significant losses of these valuable forests and have had a negative impact on the forestry economy. The acceleration of this problem due to climate change underlines the urgency of our findings. 🔎 Our research focuses specifically on phenological modelling of the Eurasian spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus L.) and the assessment of water deficit in spruce stands. We conducted our study in the Horní Planá region of the Czech Republic, using the TANABBO II software for phenological modelling and drought assessment. 💡 This software is proving to be crucial in supporting the decision-making process in forest management. It can be used to calculate different scenarios that take into account variations in precipitation and temperature, which factors influence the development of bark beetles and the occurrence of water stress in spruce stands. In recent months, our team has developed a module that quickly assesses the situation based on weather forecasts and calculates the best locations for bark beetle traps. This tool is essential to reduce the impact of bark beetles through timely and effective measures. Our team: Aleksandr Karpov , Aleksei Trubin, Ph.D. , Milan Koreň, Miroslav Blaženec, Jaroslav Holuša, Rastislav Jakuš. 📝 Dive into the full details of our research: https://lnkd.in/ekAjCqNz TANABBO GitHub: https://lnkd.in/eAGX9yxZ #Forest #Outbreak #ForestEcology #BarkBeetleOutbreak #ClimateChange #Forestry #EnvironmentalResearch #Forestry #Research #Science #ForestManagement #Ecology #Modelling

Seventy percent of New England’s wood production comes from Maine, while 70 percent of the region’s wood consumption occurs in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. How can we better balance these ratios in a way that is healthiest and most sustainable for nature and people? 🤔 A new report, Beyond the ‘Illusion of Preservation,’ suggests three pathways to achieving an ambitious vision for 2060 that would not only remedy the disparities, but also dramatically enhance protection of our forests and propel us toward meeting urgent climate and biodiversity goals. Discover those three pathways in the latest issue of From the Ground Up, and further contemplate their applications and benefits by reading reflections on the new report from some of its authors-- Brian Donahue (Brandeis University), David Foster (Harvard University), and Caitlin Littlefield (Conservation Science Partners)--as well as other foresters and scientists: >>Toward a Culture of Forestry Sustaining Forests--Michael Snyder, Greenfire Enterprises, Vermont >>Forest Time--Lincoln Fish, Bay State Forestry Service, Massachusetts >>Connecting People with Forests and Forest Products--Julie Renaud Evans, Northern Forest Center >>Wildlands Should Not Compete with Ecological Forestry--David Publicover, Appalachian Mountain Club https://buff.ly/3UJf0DH #conservation #newengland #northeast #landconservation #wwfc #fromthegroundupne #beyondtheillusion #forestry #forests

Dynamics of Land Use and Land Cover Changes..!
I am thrilled to share my latest research, Dynamic Trajectories of Land Use and Land Cover Changes in Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, published in the Turkish Journal of Forestry. Using Landsat satellite imagery and the machine learning-based Random Forest algorithm, we analyzed land cover transitions from 2013 to 2022. Our findings reveal a significant forest loss of 28,095 hectares (24% of the total forest area), driven by urbanization, population growth, and infrastructure development. This study underscores the urgent need for sustainable land management policies to balance development and ecological preservation. 📖 Read more at: DOI: 10.18182/tjf.1524144 #Research #Sustainability #LandUseChange #LombokIsland #MachineLearning #GIS #Forestry

As forestry use case of Destination Earth the #HarvesterSeasons service offers now improved soil wetness information. The #trafficability of forest soil for #harvesting during summer conditions is driven by the amount of water present in the soil. Within the project developed #machinelearning models use gradient boosting methods to update the existing model forecasts with available observation products from the LUCAS database. The adapted Soil Water Index (SWI) helps now to provide better information on your #forest trafficability under summer conditions, both in skill and spatial resolution. The higher resolution information skill come from using 1 km or finer land cover and orography predictors in addition to the high-resolution data from #DestinE and #EarthObservation #satellites. These new developments of the Harvester Seasons service for #forestry is a collaborative work of Finnish Meteorological Institute , Spatineo and Metsäteho Oy supported by Destination Earth (#DestinE), a European Union funded initiative, implemented by #Copernicus #ECMWF, #ESA, and #EUMETSAT
