Affertons Funeral Care is one of Dundee’s leading funeral directors. As we approach the end of a busy year, it’s a good time to reflect on what’s happened in 2024 and what’s yet to come. Fintry branch Our biggest achievement in the last 12 months has been the opening of our new branch in Fintry. There were no funeral directors in the area and customer feedback told us there was an opportunity for us to provide better accessibility for local people. We could have serviced the area from our Strathmartine Road branch, but local, personal service is an absolute priority when families are in their time of need. We are beginning to see a steady flow of funerals conducted through the Fintry branch. The aim over the next 12 months is to build up awareness of our local services. Jute coffins In the last year, we became the only funeral directors in Dundee to offer jute coffins in a nod to the city’s heritage and to lower the environmental impact of funerals. This has proved popular with many people saying they would like one when their time comes. New jobs Another major achievement is to have created new jobs, including an apprenticeship. We have recruited an ex-traffic warden into the profession as well as giving someone from a competitor the chance to further their career. Bespoke service Our reputation has already been firmly established as trusted, caring and experienced. Our approach to customer service is simple. We understand that everybody is different and pride ourselves on offering a bespoke service. A stream of heartfelt testimonials shows that our personalised, supportive and compassionate approach helps local people in their time of need. The team has fulfilled many requests and try to answer every family’s wishes. From the Grim Reaper conducting a service to an all-yellow theme, a live rock band or traditional Chinese ceremonial customs, there’s not much we haven’t been asked to support. Golden Charter partnership Affertons has also partnered with Golden Charter, one of the UK’s largest funeral plan providers, to offer clients a safe and reliable way to plan and give the peace of mind that, when the time comes, everything is taken care of financially. Open Door The grieving process is challenging and we are passionate about making people comfortable and removing stress. We are careful not to offer complicated “consultations” and we never want people to feel like saying goodbye to a loved one is a business transaction. We sit down with a cup of tea, have a chat, listen and do all we can to make it as simple and kind as possible. Our doors are always open. Next year, we’ll be inviting people to come to Open Days at our premises. Our strength is in our deep understanding of our clients’ needs, our flexibility and our commitment. In 2025, our continued promise is to excellence, expertise and, most importantly, a listening ear. With all best wishes from the team, Paul, Ronnie, Graham, Leanne and Conar

https://lnkd.in/d-DrCRV2 What specific qualities are you looking for in a coffin that aren't being met? But they don't have the coffin that my 'Mother' would have wanted It's completely understandable to want something that reflects your mother's wishes and personality. The right time to express your concerns is during a consultation, ideally when discussing options. You can say something like, “I don’t feel these coffins truly represent what my mother would have wanted.” This opens up a dialogue for them to show you alternatives that might be more fitting. Even then, they still don't have anything I like If none of the options resonate with you, it’s perfectly okay to let the funeral director know. You might say something like, “I appreciate your suggestions, but I’m not seeing anything that feels right for my mother.” They can often help you explore custom options or suggest alternatives that align more closely with what you have in mind. It’s important that you feel good about the choices you’re making. .What should I do to find a suitable coffin, consider these steps: Research: Look online for coffin options and styles that reflect your mother’s personality. Websites of funeral homes or specialized retailers can provide inspiration. Visit Multiple Funeral Homes: If possible, visit different funeral homes to see their selections. Each may have unique options. Ask About Custom Options: Some funeral homes allow for customization. You could design something that truly represents her. Consider Personal Touches: Think about adding personal elements, like her favorite colors or materials. Consult with Family: Talk to family members to gather ideas and ensure that everyone’s sentiments are considered. Check Online Retailers: Some websites specialize in coffins and may offer more variety than local funeral homes. Budget Considerations: Determine your budget ahead of time to narrow down your options while still considering what feels right. Taking your time to find something meaningful is important.

Do you understand the difference between pre-need funeral contracts and a FUNERAL PLAN? Pre-Need Contracts With the exception of a cemetery plot if you are certain of where you want to be buried or entombed. The Federal Trade Commission does not advocate purchasing pre-need contracts. The Funeral Rule states that all guidelines and rules set forth must be complied with at the time pre-need funeral arrangements are discussed, at the time of contract purchase and at the time of the actual funeral. The Funeral Rule does not cover the language and parameters of the actual pre-need contract, nor does The Funeral Rule set forth guidelines on things such as payment options, costs or ability to modify, transfer or cancel the contract, or administrative fees. If the survivors of the deceased pre-need contract holder inquire about funeral goods or services, alter the pre-need funeral arrangements or are required to pay additional sums of money, all relevant price lists and disclosures must be provided in writing, either printed or typewritten, by the funeral home in a format for them to keep. The survivors must also be provided, in writing, an itemized statement and final cost. Individuals or organizations selling pre-need contracts on behalf of, or acting as an agent of, one or more funeral homes, but who themselves do not sell funeral goods or services, must comply with The Funeral Rule. The Funeral Rule does not apply to pre-need funeral arrangements or pre-need contracts purchased before The Funeral Rule went into effect in 1984. However, if a pre-need contract purchased before 1984 is modified after 1984, the modification triggers all of The Funeral Rule's requirements. Since the actual pre-need contract purchased is not subject to The Funeral Rule, the Federal Trade Commission advocates that consumers who purchase a pre-need contract consider the following: - Understand if funeral goods or services, or both, have been purchased. - Where are the pre-paid funds held? Rules governing the custody of pre-paid funds vary state by state. - Pre-paid funeral arrangements are not covered by federal law and state law varies state by state. - Who benefits from the interest income if the pre-paid funds earn interest? - What protections are in place for the consumer in the event that the funeral home holding the pre-need contract goes out of business or is purchased by a national funeral home chain or is merged into another funeral home. - The specific cancellation or revision policy, including the refund policy. - Transferability of the pre-need contract to another funeral home and the associated expenses. - Up-front and ongoing administrative or other fees paid to the funeral home. A Pre-Need Funeral Contract is not, and should not be confused with a Pre-Need Funeral Plan, also known as a Funeral Plan. If you have read this in its entirety, you are most likely confused and have many questions. Contact me for assistance and guidance.

Behind the Scenes: My Experience in the Funeral Industry. It's week five at Lady Anne Funerals, and I’m reflecting on the incredible journey so far. Each day brings new challenges, but also deep fulfillment as we support families during difficult times. Here are some key lessons I’ve learned: 1. You Get What You Pay For: It is fascinating to observe the shift in how families approach funeral services. Many are now actively seeking quotes before making decisions. Back in the day, this was not the norm. Families would often rely on their local funeral homes. My colleagues have assured me that this trend is increasingly common, highlighting a more competitive landscape. Understanding these changes has been crucial for our ongoing growth and ability to thoughtfully and transparently meet families' needs. 2. Choice of Service: No Service, No Attendance (NSNA) can be the right choice for families. However, it is important to consider the realities of using larger online companies that offer services at a low cost. Visit https://lnkd.in/gqfHMUbY for more information. 3. Navigating a Competitive Market: As a 100% Australian-owned and independent company, we must work diligently to better position ourselves within a monopolised industry. I’ve been analysing current trends and collaborating with marketing to review and Reduce Cremation Prices, ensuring we remain relevant and accessible. 4. Contact Us Before You Need Us: At Lady Anne Funerals, clients can prearrange and prepay for their funeral, ensuring their farewell is tailored to their wishes. This thoughtful planning offers families peace of mind during a difficult time, allowing them to focus on healing without added stress. 5. Where Every Family is Special: My colleagues' compassion and dedication inspire me to grow personally and professionally. From planning services to celebrating lives, every moment reinforces our impact on those saying goodbye. 6. Proud partner with the National Funeral Directors Association of Australia (NFDA): Lastly, I am excited to work with the NFDA and other funeral homes to develop and introduce Industry legislation, Australian Standards and policies to reduce unethical competition and identify emerging pathways for success.

Now this is ridiculous: with all the safeguards that have cost so much money, how can this happen? https://lnkd.in/gT8tm2wN Wrote to Hon. Michael Kerzner, MPP for York, and Solicitor General for Ontario. Will post his response. "Michael, this is very frightening, I was told Ontario safeguards its residents against losing pre-paid funeral monies: if Ontario is not regularly keeping tabs on the money at banks/investment firms, what assurance is it then maintaining?! What is all this then - a waste of money for all the infrastructure and employee costs, all these years? "The BAO is under the FBCSA “The Bereavement Authority of Ontario was established as a Delegated Administrative Authority (DAA) on January 16, 2016, under the Safety and Consumer Statutes Administration Act, 1996. The BAO administers provisions of the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002 (FBCSA) which is consumer protection legislation respecting funerals, burials, cremations and related services within the province of Ontario." "The FBCSA received Royal Assent in the Ontario Legislature on December 13, 2002. In February 2011, the FBCSA was proclaimed into force to take effect July 1, 2012. The FBCSA consolidates and modernizes two statutes, the Cemeteries Act (Revised) and the Board of Funeral Services Act (formerly titled the Funeral Directors and Establishments Act). The FBCSA provides the framework for the regulation of the bereavement sector.” Michele Mark | Compliance Officer, Bereavement Authority of Ontario |100 Sheppard Av. A handful of funeral homes in Canada have been accused of mishandling funds. Are prepaid funerals still a safe bet?
