Living in the metro cities offers several perks, and one among them is the availability of services of almost every quick commerce platform. As I went to collect my order from one such platform, I found the delivery person taking shelter under a couple of trees standing outside our building. While receiving the package, I also witnessed two dogs comfortably rested underneath the shade of these trees. It has become a fairly common scene to find most quick commerce delivery persons, cab drivers, stray dogs, squirrels etc., seeking refuge under these 3-4 trees outside my building. And the reason for this repeated observation is the limited availability of trees, which shield us against the scorching sun. Imagine the relief provided by merely 3-4 trees and reflect as to how each of us- humans and animals alike rush underneath them to find solace. In times when heatwaves are causing mortalities and morbidities across the nation; trees serve as oases for relief amid concretized urban deserts. This picture should serve as reminders for all of us to begin taking actions, howsoever small, right now. The least we could do is plant some saplings and nurture their growth. But the first step is to realise that our action can make a difference. Let us choose to be aware, and act for the benefit of the planet and consequently ourselves. #environment #animals #biodiversity #trees #shade #heat #heatwaves #summer #planet #urbanization

A recent study highlights the impact of out-shopping—buying food outside the local area—on food affordability in remote regions of Scotland. It addresses a key issue in rural food security: why food prices in local shops are often much higher than urban prices, yet actual household food costs in remote areas show only small differences compared to urban households. By analysing data from the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, when travel restrictions limited out-shopping, the study found a significant increase in food costs for households that lost access to discount shops. This underscores the importance of out-shopping for maintaining food affordability in remote areas. In fact, the data reveals that 42% of households in Scotland’s remote areas rely on out-shopping to obtain affordable food. This research highlights a crucial factor in rural food security and affordability, showing that mobility and access to larger markets are vital for limiting food costs in remote areas. #FoodSecurity #RuralEconomy #Scotland #BritishFoodFortnight https://lnkd.in/erHh44nU

I am thrilled to share the results of my recent independent study conducted at the University of Washington, which delves into the adoption of rentable #grocery #bikes in #Seattle. This research provides valuable insights into the demographic characteristics and user preferences that drive the use of these #sustainable #transportation options. Our findings reveal that middle-aged, higher-income individuals who use a mix of transportation modes (active and non-active) are significantly more likely to adopt rentable grocery bikes. This demographic is particularly important as they have the potential to lead the charge in sustainable #urban #mobility. Interestingly, our research also highlights a notable gender difference, with men showing a higher inclination towards using grocery bikes compared to women. One of the most compelling aspects of our study is the identification of key #barriers to broader adoption. #Safety concerns, inadequate #infrastructure, and adverse #weather conditions were the primary obstacles cited by potential users. These issues underscore the need for #policymakers to focus on improving safety measures and infrastructure to make grocery biking a more attractive and viable option for a wider audience. Moreover, our study found that providing free access to grocery bikes significantly increases the likelihood of adoption, especially among non-active transport users. This insight suggests that #economic incentives such as free trials or discounts could play a crucial role in encouraging more people to switch to this eco-friendly mode of transportation. However, it’s important to acknowledge the limitations of our research. The non-random sampling method used may not fully represent the broader Seattle population, and the majority of responses were from central urban areas, potentially overlooking the experiences of #suburban residents. Additionally, due to time and resource constraints, the analysis may not be as comprehensive as we would have liked. Despite these limitations, the study offers significant insights that can inform future urban mobility policies. Enhancing safety measures, improving infrastructure, and providing economic incentives are critical steps that can promote the adoption of rentable grocery bikes, contributing to a more sustainable and healthier urban environment. I look forward to further discussions and research on this exciting topic. Feel free to connect if you'd like to discuss urban mobility and sustainable transportation solutions!
