🇨🇳🇺🇸 US importers attend China’s Canton Fair, despite trade curb threats Chinese exporters are maintaining a sunny outlook for the year, paying no heed to the storm clouds forming over the domestic new energy industry after allegations of overcapacity by the United States and the European Union. This optimism was on display for the latest session of the Canton Fair. More than 87,800 overseas buyers and around 28,600 Chinese exhibitors were present for the first two days of the event — an 21.8% increase in overseas participants from the previous session in November. Among those already registered, the number of US importers attending the fair rose more than 20% from the autumn session, with those from countries involved in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership trade pact and the Middle East increasing by 15.5 and 24.7% respectively. #China #USA

“A record number of overseas buyers attended China’s biggest trade fair, which concluded Sunday, though the value of their orders remained well below the all-time high. A total of 246,000 foreign buyers showed up for the spring session of the biannual Canton Fair, up 24.5% from last year’s autumn session, official figures show. The value of the orders they placed rose 10.7% to $24.7 billion. Established in 1957 in the southern metropolis Guangzhou, the Canton Fair makes a major contribution to China’s exports, and so is widely considered a barometer for the country’s foreign trade. The event has long attracted buyers from more than 200 countries and regions. This year’s attendance was up 17% from the previous record high of nearly 210,000 reached in the spring session of 2012.” “The total value of their orders, however, was still 35% off the $37.9 billion high set during the autumn session of 2011. Structural changes in China’s exports were the main reason why the record attendance didn’t translate into record orders at this year’s spring session, which started April 15, several vendors told Caixin at the event. The percentage of buyers from Europe and the U.S., who tend to make larger purchases at high per-unit prices, declined in recent years. Buyers from countries involved in China’s Belt and Road Initiative filled the gap in attendance, but not in order value because in general they made smaller purchases, the vendors said. Official numbers reflect this change, with 160,000 buyers attending from Belt and Road partner countries.” “They accounted for 65% of the total at the spring session. Buyers from Europe and the U.S. accounted for 20% of the total. Orders placed through the online platform, an add-on channel initiated after the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, jumped 33% from last year’s autumn session to $3 billion, bringing the total value of deals made at the spring session to $27.7 billion. Multiple merchants at the event said that more conventional foreign trade companies based in China sped up their online transition in the wake of the pandemic. A growing number of overseas buyers have also been reducing their reliance on the Canton Fair for purchases. This is particularly true of those from places with well-developed internet infrastructure, the merchants told Caixin.”

Import, export fair to leverage high-tech advantage #hightech #China #trade #business #opportunities With the greater presence of high-tech enterprises, China's largest trade expo will enable participants this year to tap into new business opportunities in emerging sectors and inject much-needed energy into sluggish global trade, said experts and executives. The China Import and Export Fair, also known as the Canton Fair, kicked off its 135th edition on Monday in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, and is scheduled to run through May 5. The country's major trade event continues to embrace digital technology and intelligent manufacturing, with nearly 3,600 participating companies in this field showcasing more than 90,000 intelligent products, such as artificial intelligence-powered translator devices and automated guided vehicles. The increasing focus on high-tech products and technological advancements at the trade fair serves as evidence of China's transformation from a labor-intensive manufacturing powerhouse to a major technology-driven industry player, said Bai Ming, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation. Amid a challenging external environment, products with high-tech content are gaining a competitive edge and have emerged as the key to breaking through the current global slump in foreign trade, Bai added. With exhibition venues covering 1.55 million square meters, this year's event features around 28,600 companies participating in the export section, including more than 4,300 first-timers. In addition, 680 companies will participate in the import section. Bekar Mikaberidze, founder of the Belt and Road Georgian Business House, said the fair has become synonymous with discovering fresh prospects and exploring untapped markets. He has participated in the event for more than a decade. With each visit to the fair, attendees are able to witness the emergence of new trends and technologies driving industry development, and identify potential investment or collaboration prospects, Mikaberidze said. The trade fair will showcase a wide range of new products, with the number expected to top 1 million. Among these will be more than 450,000 environmentally friendly products and more than 250,000 offerings involving indigenous intellectual property rights.

Trade in services experiencing exponential growth Visitors check out a colored lantern at the Sichuan province exhibition stand during the 2024 China International Fair for Trade in Services in Beijing on Sept 12. ZHANG WEI/CHINA DAILY For Koh Poh-Yian, senior vice-president of FedEx Express and president of FedEx China, 2024 is undoubtedly shaping up to be a busy year. The United States-based logistics service provider launched two new flights to the US from Qingdao, Shandong province, and Xiamen, Fujian province, in June, and expanded its fast cross-border shipping services for parcels heading to the US and Europe from China in July. "This year also marks the 40th anniversary of our operations in China," said Koh. "Since 1984, FedEx has been committed to expanding its logistics network and service portfolio to support the growth of China's supply chain and trade in services." In contrast to goods trade, trade in services refers to the sales and delivery of intangible services like transportation, tourism, telecommunications, advertising, education, computing and accounting. With multinational corporations such as FedEx, Denmark's Maersk Line and France's CMA CGM Group all expanding their logistics capabilities in China this year, their expansion is reflective of a broader trend in China's trade in services, a sector that has experienced exponential growth. In 1982, during the early stages of reform and opening-up, China's services trade had a total value of just over $4 billion. By 2023, this figure had jumped to $933.1 billion, a 233-fold increase, data from the Ministry of Commerce show. As global value chains undergo restructuring, market watchers said that both Chinese and foreign companies are positioning themselves to capitalize on growing demand for services such as innovation, finance, logistics, marketing and branding.
