A crucial aspect in selecting the right detergent additive is selecting the appropriate TBN value. LANXESS Lubricants and Additives offers Hybase® – high TBN overbased detergents, and Lobase® – Neutral calcium sulfonate detergents. In this post we explain the chemistry 👇 🔬The chemistry Oil in operation is subjected to oxidation and starts to collect acids. As these acids build up, the oil’s Total Acid Number (TAN) will increase. 📈 TBN (Total Base Number) is a critical parameter used to measure the alkaline reserve or buffering capacity of an engine oil or lubricant. The TBN value indicates the amount of acid a lubricant can neutralize before becoming ineffective. The higher the TBN value, the more acidic contaminants the oil can neutralize, providing enhanced protection to the engine or machinery. 📉 As the detergent performs its role, the Total Base Number (TBN) diminishes over time, eventually reaching a point where the oil needs replacement. Low/Neutral TBN vs High TBN: When to choose which additive? 🔻Low/Neutral TBN additives have limited ability to neutralize acids, which makes them suitable for applications where acidic by-products are minimal. They are commonly used as a detergent and rust inhibitor in modern engines and machinery equipped with advanced emission control systems, where the formation of acidic contaminants is minimal. 🔺High TBN additives have significant alkaline reserves. These additives are preferred for heavy-duty applications where acidic contaminants are more prevalent, such as marine engines, off-road machinery, and large diesel engines, with higher sulfur content in fuels and more demanding operating conditions. They neutralize acidic combustion by-products to prevent corrosion within the engine. LEARN MORE: https://lnkd.in/eFF_qiKJ Per-fluoroakyl and Polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS chemicals, consist of a group of around 1,200 manmade chemicals widely used in the manufacture of industrial and consumer products worldwide since the 1940s. PFAS gained widespread popularity due to the ability to resist grease, water and oils. PFAS are used in a large number of household products, including stain and water repellent fabrics, non-stick products like Teflon, polishes, waxes, paints and cleaning products. Industries that utilize chrome plating or fire-fighting foams, manufacture electronics or are oil recovery operations also frequently use PFAS. PFAS chemicals, due to their persistence, are found in the blood of people and animals worldwide and present in various food products and the environment. They disrupt hormone functions, bioaccumulate in the food chain, and pose severe health and environmental risks.

👉 The European Chemicals Agency (#ECHA) has released a comprehensive assessment on fatty acid oligomers, a group of structurally similar #UVCB substances formed from the oligomerization of unsaturated #fatty #acids (C16-C18). This group consists of 5 dimers and trimers with diverse applications, including Cleaning products, Perfumes and fragrances, Cosmetics and personal care products, Lubricants and greases, (Finger) paints. 🔍 Key findings from the assessment: 🌀 High release potential: These substances can significantly impact surface waters, soil, and groundwater, particularly when used in applications like fertilizers. 🌀 Persistence and mobility concerns: - Potentially #Persistent (P): Screening studies and biodegradation results (7.3%-29.3% CO2 degradation in 28 days) highlight limited breakdown. - Potentially #Mobile (vM): The wide log Kow range suggests some constituents are highly mobile (log Kow < 4.5). 📢 To address these risks, a #CLH proposal has been made to confirm PMT/vPvM hazards.
