📣 Cliché alert: Don’t start with the HOW! 📣 Time for some Web Summit reflections, or should I call them back-to-basics? Last week brought a stellar lineup of over 3,000 companies and startups to Lisbon. Being passionate about how scale-ups develop their products and businesses, I seized the chance to chat with as many founders as I could. So, how was it? Countless innovative ideas that will undoubtedly shape our shared future. But if I had to pick one key takeaway, it’s this: 🚀 disruptive technology doesn’t change the world—solving human problems does! 🚀 That’s where one should start. I can’t even count how many cutting-edge platforms, algorithms, and innovations I came across (the "how"), but when I asked, “What problem are you solving and for whom?”(aka the "why") the answers were rarely clear. And that’s often the gateway to funding, scaling, and commercial success—especially in crowded spaces like AI where so many teams are chasing the same wave. A stellar example? Lidiane Jones from Bumble had a clear message: Bumble fights the global epidemic of loneliness. Yes, it’s a dating app powered by advanced algorithms and features, but none of that matters unless it solves a problem. So: What problem are you solving and for whom? Challenging some fellow innovators to answer in the comments!

Today, platforms like X are controlled by a single entity, shaping what we see, share, and discuss. We believe in a different future - one where social networks are independent, open, and truly decentralized. That’s why Tensor Ventures is backing Openvibe, a distributed social platform that puts users, not corporations or billionaires, in control. With a single timeline across Threads, Mastodon, Bluesky, and Nostr, Openvibe is redefining what social media should be: free, open, and censorship-resistant. Alongside Automattic, Czech Founders VC, and Honza Široký, we’ve invested $800,000 to help scale this vision. Matej Svancer and the team are building the foundation for the future of open social - expanding integrations, growing the community, and refining the user experience. This is one of Tensor’s key consumer investments, as we believe open social is not just an idea, it’s the future of digital freedom. See Openvibe in action: 👇🏼

🤚🏼 🛑 Why the platform business model is here to stay? The platform business model has revolutionized the way we connect, consume, and conduct business. Platforms act as facilitators, bringing together producers and consumers in mutually beneficial ways. Yesterday, I attended the London Platform User Group (LoPUG) meetup which featured talks by Lesley Cordero and Gregor Hohpe. Thanks, Erik Wilde for taking me there. Both talks were so nurturing, but I was engaged by the quote below about platforms so I decided to write this post. 😐 🤔 What does the platform business model make so compelling? ▶ Network effects Platforms become more valuable as more users join. This creates a snowball effect, attracting even more users and strengthening the platform's position. ▶ Scalability Platform businesses can grow exponentially without needing significant additional resources. ▶ Innovation Platforms foster innovation by allowing third-party developers to build on top of their infrastructure and this opens doors for new features and services that benefit both the platform and its users. Special attention to the role of #APIs and #AI here. 📑 Key factors when building a platform business ▶ What problem are you solving for your target audiences? How will your platform uniquely connect them? ▶How will you attract both producers and consumers to your platform and create a critical mass for success? ▶ What your monetization strategy will be? What are your thoughts on the platform business model? I'm reading your comments! ✍ ✍ ✍ #atmira #shaperbyatmira #apieconomy #opendata #openeverything #digitaltransformation #apistrategy #businesssolutions #platformbusinessmodel #innovation #futureofwork әʌ!ʇɔәdsɹәd ɹәɥʇouɐ ɯoɹɟ ʎʇ!|ɐәɹ ɹnoʎ әәs noʎ d|әɥ ! If you think that you're too senior or experienced for Measure of Music: - You are missing one of the fastest-growing, free music data tech conferences - You are overlooking a hub of engaged music tech founders & talent - You are opting out of not only conversations on current issues, but also the next wave of the music industry's reactions to them - You are choosing not to learn something new or different about how data impacts your contribution to the music industry Stay curious! Carve out some time that weekend of Feb 21st & sign up.
Five years ago I came up with an idea to just put together a 'music data weekend' and created a form with 8 questions to see if anyone would be interested. When I created that little form, I didn't forsee 1000 people being interested in the first year, I didn't know that it would turn into the 7000+ strong community with almost $100K raised and hundreds of participants, mentors, judges, startups, artists, companies, and just generally great people all involved. With people from 90+ countries and speakers, hackathon participants, and even attendees all being majority-minority in gender and race, over these past 5 years I've done a tiny part in helping the music industry look like what the world looks like. Over these past 5 years, I've heard from so many companies, execs and artists about the opportunities they've gotten & given because of Measure of Music. Having a tiny hand in that success never stops being one of the best feelings in the world. ☺️ So with that being said, I'm thrilled to announce that YEAR FIVE of Measure of Music is now open for registrations: https://lnkd.in/etA86vAN If you'd like to get even more involved, the call for speakers has also opened up: https://lnkd.in/egMhC55s (those from underrepresented background and little speaking experience are strongly encouraged to apply!). Thank you to Songkick, Chartmetric, jump.global & Jobs by ROSTR for continuously being along for this ride. Your support is always immensely appreciated. If you'd like to discuss being the change you want to see in music, drop me a line. We're looking for 2025's sponsors and even have special rates for startups of all sizes.

📈 Platforms thrive on a delicate dance between attraction and extraction, cooperation and competition. Early in their lifecycle, platforms are magnets: i.e. pulling users, developers, and creators into their orbit with promises of value, ease, and opportunity. The goal? Build the network. Every new node strengthens the web, creating exponential growth. But as platforms mature, their priorities shift. For users, it becomes about extraction: e.g. monetizing attention, data, and loyalty. For complements (think developers, businesses, or creators), it turns into competition. The cooperation that once fueled growth morphs into battles for control over revenue and market share. Chris Dixon’s insight here is sharp: network effects are not static, they evolve. Early-stage platforms are collaborative ecosystems; late-stage platforms risk becoming extractive empires. The danger lies in forgetting the foundation of their success: mutual value creation. Platforms that overreach risk breaking their network, fracturing the trust that made them indispensable. The lesson? Platforms must balance the curve. Grow, but don’t suffocate. Cooperate, but don’t cannibalize. Long-term winners are those who extend their network effects without extinguishing the spark that created them. 📸 https://lnkd.in/d6yXBWwa

THIS FOUNDER SAYS MEMETECH IS THE NEXT BIG THING TechCrunch by Amanda Silberling 🌐 Alexander Taub, a longtime founder with multiple exits under his belt, believes it’s time to disrupt the meme industry. “I have this big thesis that memetech is going to be the next big category,” Taub told TechCrunch. “Like, there’s healthtech, there’s proptech, there’s adtech, there’s fintech… I think memetech is about to have a big moment.” Taub might sound like he’s spent a bit too much time in the trenches of the content mines. But he has a point. If you want to send your friend the perfect Spongebob meme, what are you supposed to do? Google “mr krabs confused meme”? Memes are a key component of our online communications – from boomers posting minions to gen alpha posting about toilets – and yet few companies have tried to do anything new. 🏖 On Wednesday, Taub launched Meme Depot, which he aspires to build into a comprehensive archive of any meme imaginable. “You have collections, which are like Subreddits, visually,” he explains. If you’re looking for a Kim Kardashian meme, for example, there would be a Kim Kardashian collection that you can navigate to. “And visually, they’re very easy to look through, like Pinterest.” 🗼 “There’s a lot of controversy about like, who is allowed to monetize memes? Is it the creator of the meme, is it the person in the meme?” he said. “If this takes off the way I think it will, we might add a new wrinkle to this, which is a good thing. You want people to talk about it.” These same questions were raised during the NFT boom of 2021, when the subjects of viral memes like Scumbag Steve, Disaster Girl and Overly Attached Girlfriend sold their iconic images as NFTs. This was often the first time that these people earned any money for being the subject of viral memes – Disaster Girl, now in her twenties, earned the equivalent of $500,000 in ETH at the time, though that could have depreciated significantly depending on what she did with the cryptocurrency. Then there’s memes like Pepe the Frog, which evolved from an innocent cartoon to an alt right symbol, and back again to a Twitch emote and crypto meme. When an image is so divorced from its origin, it could belong moreso to the public than its original creator. “People can monetize the community around the meme without monetizing the meme itself,” Taub said. Meme Depot is part of Truth Arts, which operates with a mixture of venture funding, royalties from the Goblintown NFT collection, and money from selling past ventures like SocialRank, a social media analytics company. For some business-minded folk, the question may persist: why memes? Taub’s answer is simple: “Memes are culture, and culture is entertainment.” 🐿 learn more: https://lnkd.in/ecgri5XK #meme #crypto #fashion #investment #metaverse
