Thanks HealthLeaders magazine for article on "Making the Business Case for Infection Preventionists". As profiled recently in other news, approximately 80% of hospitals are understaffed with Infection Preventionists, which puts patients at increased risks. Unfortunately, the new QALC-IPC-Guidelines includes frequent use of ABHR (Alcohol-Based Hand Rubs). They just used CDC guidelines without considering the group of people that this is supposed to protect. Everyone with "normal" skin knows that ABHR causes dryness and frequent use can lead to ABHR dissolving the lipid barrier of the skin which leads to Eczema and Dermatitis. Now consider what ABHR can do to aging skin that already is less oily, less elastic and thinner. It bruises easily and takes more time to heal. So why not use something for hand hygiene that won't contribute to and accelerate dermal damage in senior living facilities when there is an easy solution. The UK and Europe use HOCI for Hand and Surface Sanitization. HOCI is also used as a Wound Cleanser and as an Eczema Therapy product that is Accepted by the National Eczema Association and the SkinSafe group from the Mayo Clinic. Maybe QALC should reconsider their recomendation to use ABHR.
