While cycling infrastructure is still limited in many #SouthAfrican communities, we firmly believe change is possible with the right policies and investments. As the message from UNESCO highlights, supportive infrastructure and policies are crucial for making bicycles a viable, central mode of transportation. Currently, cyclists in our country often bear the burden of safety due to a lack of dedicated cycling lanes and infrastructure integrated with public transit. However, this should not discourage us. If local governments and institutions are committed to promoting cycling, they must prioritize creating safe, well-designed bicycle routes and protected intersections. Building robust cycling networks sends a powerful message that cyclists belong and enables more people to embrace cycling for transportation, not just leisure. As the Dutch have shown, when cycling becomes ingrained through extensive infrastructure, it transcends being just an activity - it becomes a way of life. While the road ahead has challenges, the long-term benefits of increasing cycling access are immense - reducing emissions, improving health, and enhancing mobility equity. With determination and strategic investments, we can pave the way for South African cities where cycling is as natural as saying, "I'm not a cyclist, I'm just South African." Let's come together to advocate for the institutional changes needed to build the cycling-friendly future our communities deserve. The transformation may take time, but as the saying goes, "Build it well, and they will come." Our vision is achievable if we stay committed.
Change begins not only with individuals but also within our institutions. To build a future where bicycles are a central mode of transportation, we must implement supportive policies and infrastructure. A world with greater bicycle accessibility is healthier, more equitable and environmentally sustainable. On #WorldBicycleDay, listen to Chris Bruntlett, Director of International Relations at the Dutch Cycling Embassy, deliver an insightful message to policymakers worldwide. This year, Interreg Cooperation Day events took place across Europe and even in the Amazon, uniting communities in a celebration of green initiatives! 🌍 From Coastal Cleanup Week to European Mobility Week and World Rivers Day, we showcased our dedication to a more sustainable and cooperative future. We organised eight cleanup activities in beaches, rivers and forests across locations like Portugal, Madeira, Ukraine and Hungary. Cycling expeditions linked countries with routes from Poland to Germany, as well as symbolic rides connecting Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. In the area of university education, institutions engaged in discussions on waste sorting and sustainability, and even participated in an eco-competition “Ideas that can Change the World.” Lastly, the International Walking and Cycling Photo Competition promoted sustainable mobility across the Baltic Sea Region, led by six cities. A huge thank you to everyone who participated in these events and to the organizers! 🌿 SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT: Meeting of European Transport Ministers 🚲🚆 European Transport Ministers convened on April 3rd and 4th in Brussels to discuss the greening of transport, active mobility, and railway connectivity. Despite measures taken, greenhouse gas emissions from the sector continue to rise due to increasing demand. Active mobility, particularly cycling, was praised for its positive effects on the environment, health, and economy. The Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU identified key measures for a European cycling policy: • Increase funding for cycling infrastructure. • Establish a European strategy for bike production and recycling. • Share data and best practices on a European scale. Railway connectivity, especially night trains and international ticketing, was also central to the discussions. Ministers also addressed the financing of the trans-European transport network through various European instruments. #SustainableTransport #EU #ActiveMobility #Cycling #RailwayConnectivity #BelgianPresidency #EUCouncil #TEN_T #EuropeanFunding

🚴♂️ Do you think cycling can be a political act? 💥🤯 Until my good friend Michele Argenta said those words, I hadn't considered it. But looking back, it's clear: cycling was my subtle political statement before I even realized it. I started cycling to work simply because there was no public transport to my job in the Italian Alps. What seemed like a practical solution sparked conversations at the local café about what it means to cycle to work in such an up&down hill place (spoiler! Alot of time management and changes of clothes), also got a few colleagues to join in on the #lowemissioncommute - Shoutout to Giorgia Verì and Matteo Mocellin who sometimes joined me up the big hill to work! 🚵♀️ Those hills and km led to a deeper love, not just for cycling, but it became a modality of transport; it became a way to explore the connections between territories. To do the one thing humans will never stop doing - moving around. Just as I value exploring places on my bike, I value my right to choose those who represent me in the European Union. That’s why as an individual and as Protect Our Winters Italy I support the #RideBikeClimbVote campaign because voting for the #EUelections allows me to support policies that impact my life, other humans, and the places I love. If you live in Italy, go vote on the 8th and 9th of June. I'll be cycling to the polls, but however you get there, make sure you show up and Vote for your future. WHAT IF there was a way of ranking of EU political groups and national parties based on voting records on climate, nature, and pollution legislation? 👀have a look at the Scoreboard on Protect Our Winters Europe website link in the comments below! #GoVote #EuropeanElections2024 #SustainableTransport 📸by Michele Filippucci on a rest/train day

#NEWS €87 billion are at stake to prioritise reliable, affordable and sustainable transport. The European Cyclists' Federation now calls on Member States to include cycling in their national Social Climate Plans as a powerful solution to combat transport poverty. The EU Social Climate Fund (SCF) aims to increase the accessibility and affordability of zero- and low-emission transport and building alternatives, addressing energy and transport poverty among lower-income groups and micro enterprises. Cycling and active mobility —including bike-sharing services and cycling infrastructure—offer the quickest, most reliable, and cost-effective way to tackle transport poverty, making it a key element of the SCF. While Member States hold the power to shape their Social Climate Plans, active mobility needs strong advocacy now. And Tomorrow.Mobility is the platform to make this happen. 🗓️ On 6 November, Henk Swarttouw, President of the European Cyclists' Federation, will be at the roundtable 'Measuring and promoting active mobility' together with: ➤ Judith Schuermans, Innovation Manager at EIT Urban Mobility [moderator] ➤ Paloma Nieri Romero, Urban Planning Project Manager at CARNET ➤ Anne de Koster, Sustainability Advisor & Coordinator 100 Climate Neutral Cities at City of The Hague ➤ Cantal Bakker, Founder and Operation Director at Pikala Bikes ➤ Irene McAleese, co-founder at See.Sense This is the time to advocate for active mobility and #MoveBetter. 📩 Get your pass: https://lnkd.in/dz7qbfAH #UrbanMobility #SCF #ActiveMobility #TMWC24 #Cycling EIT - European Institute of Innovation and Technology | Cycling Industries Europe | Dutch Cycling Embassy

Eddy Liegeois, Head of Transport Networks and Director of Investment, Innovative, and Sustainable Transport Directorate DG MOVE, European Commission at #CIE2024Summit: "The EU cycling industry represents more than 1 million jobs, many of which are local, and the EU is a world leader in bike sharing. This entire ecosystem, especially local jobs and many SMEs, is crucial for our economy. We need to work on the exchange of best practices and networking. Not all Member States are on the same level. We need better data. And we need cities to play an active role via the use of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans to upgrade urban infrastructure." #CyclingIndustriesEurope
