A thought provoking article, that should remind everyone that the danger from asbestos is still very much present in the UK. There has to be a better and sustainable approach as Charles Pickles rightly points out. We can’t keep kicking the problems down the road! We must make asbestos safety a priority, to ensure we tackle the horrendous effects of exposure to this material. Global Asbestos Awareness Week 💨 This week is Global Asbestos Awareness Week which aims to bring organisations, support groups, medical professionals, and individuals together to inform others about the dangers of asbestos exposure, share information about asbestos-related diseases, and promote measures to prevent exposure. Recently the US announced a ban on the only form of asbestos currently used or imported into the country, after failing to do so three decades ago. The UK passed the ban on asbestos over a quarter of a century ago and in turn, is still working to diminish asbestos from buildings in the UK. Currently, removal takes place using a clearance process, involving air monitoring, using instruments like Casella's Vortex3 which is designed to simplify the sampling of airborne contaminants such as asbestos. The World Conference on Drowning Prevention's closing statement has been released. Conference delegates drafting the statement wish to highlight a call for global strategy and mobilising local action. Three main takeaways have come shared including that tackling the issue of drowning prevention must remain a collective effort as it is bigger than any one organisation or individual. Diversity and equity must be present in all aspects of drowning prevention – prioritising those who are most vulnerable, listening to those most affected and championing their voices into action to create meaningful change. Our younger generations are the future of getting messaging across to continue to address the ongoing issues of drowning prevention. Adequate time and effort must be spent educating our future leaders and change makers in order to continue the work and progress which has already been made. For now, until the next World Conference, be sure to collaborate, educate, create and connect with one another to ensure we continue on a path to form a world free from drowning. This week is National Asbestos Awareness Week. Did you know? 🔎 Despite being banned in 2003, thousands of buildings and machinery parts still contain asbestos. The risk of exposure to asbestos increases as the materials start to age. Asbestos-containing materials that are damaged, disturbed or deteriorating can release dangerous fibres into the air, putting people at risk of breathing in these fibres, which can cause asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. Over the last 5 years, there have been 513 accepted workers’ compensation claims where the injury or disease was related to asbestos. Knowing where asbestos is located in your workplace is critical.
