I don't give our editorial team of the Central Bank Payments News (CBPN), Brianna Erban and Jordan Taylor, credit often enough. The latest issue of CBPN is about to hit the virtual shelves, and it's yet again an invaluable source of information about developments in payments from Central Banks' views. What we don't mention often enough though is the additional value gained from being able to access the full back-catalogue of the publication, regardless when you started your subscription. I wanted to refresh my memory on the payments infrastructure in Kenya and couldn't have found a more succinct and relevant summary as in the 12 page feature we published earlier, with contributions from six different authors from the Central Bank of Kenya. Yes, it's behind a paywall, but that's for a good reason. The publication is advertising-free and carefully curated by our editorial team, which comes at a cost. We also don't sell our readers' data to third parties. I'll be speaking at the #3iSummit in Ghana about the Bank's work in promoting Regional Regulatory #SandboxesforFintech. It's been quite the journey since we published our first report on #RegulatorySandboxes back in 2022. During the summit, I am mainly looking forward to speaking to 14 Heads of Central Banks on the potential of a framework that allows #fintech innovators recognized under these #sandboxes to operate across borders. One thing that is quite clear on the Continent is our shared socio-economic struggles, but diverse policy landscape. It prevents us from harnessing the potential of #innovation- which, by the way, is abundant on the Continent.

More women needed as central bank governors: Only 29 of the world’s 185 central banks are led by female governors.  According to the latest report by the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum (OMFIF), while the number of female appointments has increased from 23 last year, there is still a need for more women in this role.  “While there are more women in senior positions across central banks and top financial institutions this year, only 14% of the 63 institutions with new governors or chief executives in the index appointed women.  At this rate of change, the prospect of gender parity in leadership remains a long way away,” noted OMFIF. According to research by the International Monetary Fund, a greater gender balance in senior positions may help increase diversity, which will contribute to increased economic and financial stability and improved performance. We should this again sir! 😀 My notes: - I got tremendous feedback from the attendees of the Masterclass “Modern Central Banking For The Fintech Era”. People appreciated the opportunity to understand the basics of central banking. Thank you to all who attended!! - If not for inclusion, but for lower costs/competition, central banks are considering expanding access to their systems to nonbanks find ways to engage with regulators. - Tokenized Assets ie Virtual Assets are very interesting for their potential to expand capital markets to more people. - Stablecoins and CBDC have the potential to provide practicality for payments that #Bitcoin can’t provide: stability and lower costs - The VASP bill is actively being worked on in Kenya.
