🌿🚜 Across the UK, farmers are already experiencing the worsening impacts of changing weather patterns, with drought and flooding impacting food production; so many people are asking: how can we tackle climate change through farming? 🌾✨ Green groups are advocating for a significant increase in the farming budget for UK farmers, aiming for £5.9 billion annually, upwards of the current annual agricultural budget which is £3.5 billion, which has stayed the same since 2013. "We are urging the new UK government and devolved governments to urgently rise to this challenge with more ambitious funding models for nature-friendly farming. Farmers must be rewarded for helping nature to recover and tackling climate change, as well as producing food. These issues are deeply interlinked." “Farmers and crofters are in the front-line of climate change and nature loss and many are already experiencing the impacts of these on food production and their livelihoods. A key factor to reduce #deforestation is improving food security.    Between 2000 and 2020, agricultural expansion drove almost 90% of global deforestation. Small-scale farming caused 68% of agriculture-driven deforestation, while large-scale farming contributed to 32%.    Food production, especially within intensive models, stands as a primary contributor to, and is simultaneously impacted by deforestation.    Urgent action is imperative.    To reduce deforestation, we need to improve production systems and ensure food security, income, and land rights for local communities. Feodora Rayner Head of Policy at CropLife UK spoke about what’s next for PPP regulations. She emphasised how important it is to “produce sufficient, safe, healthy and affordable food.” In the UK we need to produce more food, from less land, and yet across the agricultural supply chain we are seeing higher costs and operating challenges. She argued that policy needs to be science led, and that regulators must support those who they regulate to help them comply with regulation and innovate within their sector. The natural systems that support us are all on the risk register. Natural capital supports the food we eat, our air and water, helps us cope with the impacts of climate change and boosts our health and wellbeing. Natural England's ‘State of Natural Capital Report for England 2024’ looks at all of our vital ecosystem services and has deemed they are all at high or medium-high risk. This means that the social and economic benefits they provide are at risk too.🔴 WWF's Living Planet Report 2024 is the same grim picture for the entire planet.🌍 These reports show how our climate crisis and our ecological crisis are intertwined as one, and why managing the limited land resources we have are crucial to dealing with it. Our recent policy briefing “UK Farming and Land Use: Addressing the Climate and Ecological Emergencies while Supporting Farmers” provides an essential evidence base for decisions around the future of the UK’s farming, food system and broader land use. It charts a pathway to a just transition for the local communities that are finding themselves in the middle of this crisis. Today we saw the Welsh Government's statement on the future of SFS in Wales. This was on the day after flooding once again tragically impacted individuals, communities and businesses in Wales. It's clear a faster transition to more nature-friendly farming is needed to increase nature-based solutions to flooding including ·      Increasing vegetation cover, for instance with riparian buffers, cover crops and agroforestry, to absorb and retain water through the root systems.  ·      Protecting soil as degraded soil is less able to retain water. Using regenerative and organic agricultural practices, like cover crops, and more complex rotations.  ·      Restoring rivers to a near-natural state by reintroducing the native beaver, and restoring wetlands - areas of land that are either permanently or seasonally covered with water. ·      Restoring peatlands – critical nature and carbon-rich habitats which can retain huge amounts of water if they are in a good state. This would not only be good for nature, but it could also help farmers to increase their profits and boost farm resilience to our changing climate. We want the SFS to support, farmers in bringing about nature’s recovery and adaptation to climate change. Although the Welsh Government have successfully brought together a wide spectrum of organisations to listen to farmers' concerns. This can't distract from the reality that farms need to become resilient to climate change and therefore excluding key elements of water management and shelter for livestock in the Universal tier will need addressing. We now need to see commitments for nature and climate in the Options and Collaborative tiers with a realistic budget and have a clear pathway to increase ambition over time. The future of farming must enable: ✅ Resilience to climate change ✅ Natures restoration ✅ Economic viability Find out more https://lnkd.in/ek-nGHBr

The UK is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world and this is now a politically recognised global challenge, and one that is directly impacting our economic growth. Just last week David Lammy made clear that the UK Government will focus on “the most profound and universal source of global disorder – the climate and nature emergency." So while the Government has made clear it is likely to be a painful budget next month, we also know that any cuts to nature-friendly farming funding would be a false economy, and a backwards step in building the long-term resilience of UK farming. This week, we’ve launched a petition that calls for more funding for nature-friendly farming. This is because:  - We need nature to grow food – healthy soils, clean water, and a rich diversity of life. Farmland nature-based solutions can also reduce carbon emissions and help mitigate against the effects of climate change such as flooding.  - Nature needs our farmland to survive – unsustainable farming methods are one of the biggest causes of wildlife decline but nature-friendly farming methods can help bring species back. - Biodiversity loss poses one of the greatest threats to food production in the medium to long term. We must boost the resilience of UK farming, making our farming businesses more resilient and profitable for many years to come.   And in terms of the big picture, you’ll have seen me share this stat before. Recent research from the Green Finance Institute found that damage to the natural environment is slowing the UK economy, and could lead to an estimated 12% reduction to GDP in the years ahead. Of course, we know the UK Government faces many difficult financial challenges, but failing to invest in nature now will hit our economy and food production in the future.
