#FCPSTeacherTuesday “I had always wanted to work a career in which I could help people and work with the public. I had been in several classrooms as a substitute teacher, but after working in special education, I knew this was the career for me. As a teacher, I can share my love of History and Math with my students as well as teach my students the skills and knowledge necessary for life beyond school. ” Stephen Estep Intellectual Disabilities Teacher Stone Middle School If you'd like to join the #FCPSFam and become a teacher with FCPS, apply now! https://bit.ly/3DtIspG

Does RTI actually work? 🤔 I just came across an interesting study on the impact of Response to Intervention (RTI) in Tennessee schools by Gilmour et al., 2023 (DOI: 10.1177/00222194231215013). Curious about what they found? Read on 👇 The study revealed a significant decline in the identification of students with specific learning disabilities (SLD) after RTI was implemented, particularly among Black students and those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. 📉 The chances of being identified with an SLD by third grade dropped by 61%. While this seems promising, the study raises an important question: Are these declines because students are performing better, or are we just delaying identification? 🤔 A great reminder that we need more research to ensure RTI is truly meeting the needs of all students. What are your thoughts on this? Let’s discuss! 💬 #EdResearch #MTSS #EquityInEducation #SLD #SpecialEducation

🤔Do you know the difference between a 504 plan and an individualized education plan (IEP), and which would benefit your child best? 👉A 504 Plan is designed to ensure your child has the necessary accommodations to access education. On the other hand, an IEP (Individualized Education Program) focuses on accommodations in the delivery of academic material. ☁️ 504 Plan: Environmental 📚 IEP: Academic While both plans aim to support students with disabilities, a 504 plan focuses on accommodations within the general education setting, whereas an IEP provides more extensive and specialized services and instruction. 🤨 Still trying to understand? In under-resourced or rapidly changing environments, providing adequate support for special education students can be a tough challenge. As revealed by the National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD), reading and math scores show that students with SLDs that identify as Black or Hispanic face even larger opportunity gaps compared to their White and Asian peers. That's precisely why Intervene K-12 offers affordable and user-friendly intervention programs tailored to underserved school districts. Together, let's make #specialeducation more equitable. #Support #BreakingBarriers #Education #Awareness

It's crucial to address the challenges faced in inclusive education. Ensuring that children with special needs are fully engaged in the classroom for the entire period is no easy feat. The question arises: Is one special educator per school equipped to handle this responsibility effectively? The reality is that inclusive education is being viewed as an experiment rather than a concrete plan. Also there are children with borderline issues end up being overlooked and labeled as back benchers within the system. There is a pressing need to reevaluate and prioritize the support system to ensure inclusion receives the attention and resources it deserves. #InclusiveEducation #SpecialNeeds #CBSE

Let's talk ESY! ✨ESY (Extended School Year) - Specialized instruction or related services outlined in the IEP and delivered when school is not typically in session. While oftentimes they take place in the summer, they can also occur over other breaks in the school year. ✨ESY Factors to Consider: - Regression and Recoupment - will the student recover lost skills - Degree of Progress - progress towards goals and objectives - Emerging Skills and Breakthrough Opportunities - are skills at a breakthrough point - Interfering Behaviors - are there any interfering behavior(s) - Nature and/or Severity of Disability - does ESY benefit or hinder the learner based on their disability ✨ESY is NOT: - Summer School - Enrichment Program - Respite Program - Remedial Program - Provided for the purpose of the helping students with disabilities catch up with peers Did you know about ESY? What would you add? #ESY #SpecialEducation #EFMP #MilitaryChildren #MilitaryFamilies
