Things can't be easy for Max Verstappen right now.
I am aware of the apparent ridiculousness of that statement. The man is winning everything there is to be won in #F1, he has a beautiful girlfriend, and wealth that 99,99% of the world can only dream of.
He's still a human being, though. And right now, through no fault if his own, his dad is publicly arguing with his boss, and his team is the topic of daily, incessant, intense media scrutiny.
I'm not going to comment on what is going on. Not because I don't care about it. I think everything that is happening at Red Bull, and how it will eventually be resolved, is incredibly important from the perspective of diversity & inclusion in motorsport. However, I sincerely do not know 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 is going on. There's a new story every day, but I don't feel comfortable commenting on speculation.
What I will comment on, is how Max seems to be able to keep it all outside the car. When we interviewed Nico Rosberg, he explained how difficult it is to deal with the constant pressure that is put on drivers via the media:
https://lnkd.in/enf2RZPY
I can't help but admire how Max is dealing with all the questions, and how his performance hasn't suffered one iota. Or, at least, that's what I assume, because the #SaudiArabianGP was yet another masterclass in track dominance.
Another great example of thriving under intense pressure came from Oliver Bearman. Imagine being 18 years old, on your way to your next F2 race, and being told to turn around and hop into an F1 car for your first Grand Prix! And not just any F1 car, but a 𝙁𝙚𝙧𝙧𝙖𝙧𝙞, the most legendary name in all of motorsport. With only one practice session under his belt, hardly any prep time, and on one of the most demanding tracks on the calendar, Bearman managed an impressive P7.
Both drivers showed a strong internal locus of control (the belief that the outcomes of their actions are the result of their own abilities), and amazing emotion regulation: Verstappen in keeping it together when everyone was talking about his team alledgedly falling apart, and Bearman in dealing with the pressure of every journalist and their mother talking about how this was 'his one chance to prove himself'.
(By the way, between him and Liam Lawson, I think there is a very strong business case for having another team on the grid, there is some unused potential watching from the sidelines that deserves some more track time!)
As high performers, these two have provided us with great examples of performing under pressure, keeping a forward focus, and blocking out distractions.
Skills like locus of control and emotion regulation aren't just relevant at the race track. They are relevant in any work-related situation that involves pressure. They allow us to frame pressure positively, as challenging, instead of negatively, as threatening.
Small semantic difference, massive behavioral impact!
