I made a last-minute decision to attend the Marketing Association's Marketing That Matters conference in Wellington yesterday. In a curious twist of fate, I ended up on a table of marketers from Hawke's Bay, and only one known to me already. It was so cup-filling to spend a day hearing great stories and learning from some kick-arse presenters. I also figured out that if you don't really know anyone at a conference, but hang around waiting for your coffee order, it's really easy to strike up a conversation. What are your best tips for breaking the ice with strangers at conferences?

Great meeting with a client this morning planning their marketing strategy for the rest of 2024. They have two clear goals which we’re working towards: 1️⃣ Raising brand awareness 2️⃣ Generating leads It’s their 12 month anniversary next month so they’re still a very new business within the UK, but are already well known across Europe due to their parent company being based in Finland. Customers leave feeling seen, heard, and connected. The feedback was overwhelming; people felt they had a personal bond with the brand, and Mr. Emeka's story had become theirs, too. Last night, Edward and I had the pleasure of attending the Oystercatchers Club Evening where we dived deep into the topic of long-term marketing effectiveness, guided by insights from this year’s Effie Awards. The panel was outstanding: Kieran Bradshaw - Head of Effectiveness, Mother, Rachel Emms - Managing Director, Effie UK, Adam Morton - Chief Product Officer, UM. Moderated brilliantly by Rebecca McKinlay Managing Director, Oystercatchers. 📝 Here are a few takeaways that stood out to me 👇 • Effectiveness is more than ROI. While ROI is important, it’s not the only metric. True effectiveness takes many forms, rooted in the real world - not just what we perceive as effective. Recognising the stepping stones that influence outcomes is key. • Distinctive brand identity matters. Successful brands know who they are - distinctive assets, tone of voice, and where they show up. Attempting to radically change a brand’s identity without substance won’t fool consumers. Authenticity and consistency are non-negotiable. • Creative campaigns as operating systems. Great creative goes beyond the campaign itself; it becomes an “operating system” for the business. • Collaboration drives integration. The best campaigns seamlessly integrate media and creative through collaboration between agencies and brand teams. The Tesco Ramadan campaign by BBH and Essence Media perfectly exemplified this. • Focus and simplicity win. When it comes to awards entries, clarity and simplicity are essential. As one panelist put it, “Don’t overcompensate - judges can spot the BS.” Overall, a brilliant reminder of the importance of storytelling, measurement, and consistent test-and-learn agendas in driving long-term success. Awards can celebrate great work, but at the end of the day, if a campaign delivers results and meets objectives, that’s what truly matters (an effie would be amazing though… one day Recipe 💪🏼 💥) Thank you to the panel and Oystercatchers for an insightful evening!
