Navigating Governance: The Role of Elected School Boards and Community Voices in Chicago In recent years, the landscape of educational governance in Chicago has seen significant shifts, particularly with the transition from an appointed school board to an elected one. Ongoing debates about democratic representation and the effectiveness of school governance largely fueled this change. However, despite these structural changes aimed at increasing accountability and community involvement, many believe that the voices of parents and students continue to be overshadowed by political dynamics, particularly those influenced by the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) and city leadership. The CTU, a major stakeholder in Chicago's educational system, is pivotal in shaping school policies and labor relations. Its influence is often seen as a double-edged sword. While it champions the rights and conditions of teachers, to read the rest click the link.... Thanking you in advance. https://lnkd.in/gNiCpJes

🔍 As we observe the developments at Cranbrook this week, it's essential for Board or Council members all child-related institutions to reflect on the lessons emerging from these events. The spotlight on safeguarding governance and accountability is brighter than ever before, and rightly so. In today's landscape, there's a notable shift towards holding Boards and Councils more answerable, with many states incorporating clauses such as failure to protect and failure to report into their legal frameworks. This places a crucial obligation on leaders to implement robust measures for handling and overseeing allegations. Boards and Councils must proactively seek knowledge and ask the pertinent questions - ignorance is no longer acceptable. If you're a Board or Council member seeking guidance on navigating these challenges, don't miss an opportunity to learn and improve your processes. We offer tailored support including board training and the development of reporting frameworks to ensure you and your colleagues fulfill your safeguarding obligations effectively. 📞 0430 544 915 📩 joy@woods-consulting.com.au #safeguardinggovernance #childsafeguarding #boardofdirectors #schoolleadership #schoolboard #principals https://lnkd.in/gNMEGxf4

Heads' Legal Challenge Against Special-School Redesignation A significant development in education emerged this week as special-school leaders in Kent are seeking legal action against the county council's redesignation plans. The Kent Special Educational Needs Trust (KSENT), representing 24 special schools, believes the consultation on these plans was flawed. Special-school heads are now instructing legal counsel to consider a judicial review. The crux of the issue lies in Kent County Council's proposal to change the designation and admissions guidance for several special schools. The council aims to ensure children with severe and complex needs can access suitable education within their local communities. However, KSENT argues that the consultation lacked sufficient detail, evidence, and genuine collaboration. The council's move follows critical reports from Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission on SEND provisions. Special-school leaders worry that insufficient preparation for the proposed changes could lead to discriminatory outcomes for children with SEND. What are your thoughts on this development? Share your insights in the comments below or visit https://lnkd.in/e2nGRuCx for more information on how we support our teaching professionals. #SEN #EducationNews #SchoolLeadership
