Did you know that Islands Trust Conservancy protects 113 properties throughout the Islands Trust Area? Of that 113, 34 are Nature Reserves and 79 are Conservation Covenants. Each one of the protected properties holds a unique story! Over the past 34 years, we have partnered with landowners, community groups, local conservancies, and more to ensure that the biodiversity of the islands is protected forever, and ecosystems, species, and habitat preserved and restored. One of the ways that you can learn about the places we protect, and the story behind how and why it was protected, is through our Protected Places Map! Our partner Fauna & Flora has revealed its list of 'Ten Species to Watch in 2025' 📢 👇 Included on this fascinating list of imperiled species is the paperclip-sized Nguru spiny pygmy chameleon🦎 This tiny reptile, along with two other pygmy chameleon species, are the focus of one of our 2024 award-winning projects in Tanzania. These three co-existing 'sisters', as they are known locally, are severely threatened by habitat loss due to agricultural expansion and logging, and by the illegal pet trade. Project leader Eva Ayaro says, "Protecting the Nguru spiny pygmy chameleon is essential not only for conserving a unique species but also for safeguarding the rich biodiversity of Tanzania’s montane forests. This species is a symbol of resilience, yet it remains highly vulnerable. Wonderful WCS and Guatemala! Contrast that with the Honduran Rio Plátano Biosphere Reserve, where it has been estimated by @INCEBIO that a Jaguar needs c. 30 Km2 to survive there. However, in its infinite wisdom, the government has given permission for roads to cut through the Rio Plátano Biosphere Reserve and of course the cattle grazing areas will spike , as will GHG emissions, erosion and sedimentation in estuarine areas like Brus Lagoon.

In a significant contribution to Australia’s conservation efforts, researchers Tom Espinoza and Dr David Sternberg from Burnett Mary Regional Group have co-authored a new journal article on the conservation status of Australia’s freshwater fish species. The study, which involved 51 experts from across the nation, shines a light on the escalating threats to these unique species, highlighting the urgent need for conservation actions. Our #NewPaper has been published in support of Indigenous-led conservation, such as Guardians Programs, Territories of Life and Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas. This latest paper from the University of Guelph People, Plants and Policy Lab 🌿 was led by Dr. Jessica Lukawiecki. This research builds upon the earlier foundational studies of Dr. Nancy Turner, CM, OBC, PhD, FRSC, FLS and many Indigenous Knowledge Holders across Turtle Island on the conservation of cultural keystone species (CKS) in traditional territories. We found that CKS, rather than being viewed as objects for conservation, can be understood as ongoing relationship(s) between the cultural and ecological, which are intimately tied to language, knowledge, practices, and places in ways that are deeply interconnected. Therefore, one cannot effectively protect CKS species, such as caribou or salmon or grizzly bears, without also protecting the ancient relationships that Indigenous Peoples have to that species - such as cultural burning, fishing, harvesting and other customary forms of Indigenous-led stewardship of wildlife.
