Incorporating a Peer Support Recovery Specialist program in an addiction or mental health treatment center offers clear benefits both to the clients (in terms of increased support, engagement, and reduced stigma) and to the business (through cost-effectiveness, enhanced outcomes, and improved client retention). With growing evidence supporting peer support's role in fostering successful long-term recovery, such programs are becoming integral to comprehensive treatment models. #peersupport #peerspecialist #sud #outpatient #treatment #recovery #recoverylifecollective #addiction #recoverycoach #aftercare #wellness

It’s been my experience that having peers with lived experience and peers with family/friend experience enhance the recovery process for all those involved. The recovery peers have knowledge and resources for multiple pathways to recovery, links to services and support that the client can utilize. They provide encouragement, help keep people on track with their treatment/recovery plans, and help the person build on their successes and overcome challenges. The goal being keeping the person engaged in their treatment during early recovery (the first two years) which will lead to greater outcomes by having clients leave treatment already in sustained long-term recovery. Having family peers to support the loved ones of the person facing substance/mental health challenges helps in multiple ways: Peers can provide education on Substance and Co-occuring disorders which explains why their loved behave the way they do when they are active and when they are in early recovery (the first 2 years). More effective communication skills are taught and supports for the family/friends are provided (support groups, linkages to family therapists). This enables the family to recover from the unhealthy dynamics of their relationships with their loved ones that have a SUD.

May is a time to raise awareness of and reduce the stigma surrounding behavioral health issues, as well as highlighting the ways how mental illness and addiction can affect all of us – patients, providers, families, and our society at large. Mental Health Awareness Month was established in 1949 to increase awareness of the importance of mental health and wellness in Americans’ lives and to celebrate recovery from mental illness. For more than 20 years, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has recognized Mental Health Awareness Month (MHAM) every May to increase awareness about the vital role mental health plays in our overall health and well-being and provide resources and information to support individuals and communities who may need mental health support. #mentalhealthawarenessmonth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthadvocy #mentalhealthrecovery #mentalhealthisimportant
