As the Director General of Foreign Affairs for BEM REMA UPI, I had the privilege of being invited to a high-level discussion organized by Pertamina. The theme of the discussion, "Implikasi Kebijakan terhadap Kedaulatan dan Ketahanan Ekonomi" (Policy Implications on Sovereignty and Economic Resilience), resonated deeply with my interests in international relations and economic policy. Participating in this discussion was a significant milestone in my journey, not only because of the prestige associated with the event but also due to the personal and professional growth it spurred. Engaging with industry leaders and policymakers provided me with invaluable insights into the intricate relationship between national policy and economic stability. The conversations were intense and thought-provoking, challenging me to think critically and articulate my views clearly. This experience further sharpened my soft skills, particularly in communication and diplomacy. Being able to discuss complex economic and political issues with experts required me to refine my ability to convey ideas succinctly and persuasively. The importance of active listening became evident as I navigated the dialogue, ensuring that my contributions were relevant and impactful. Moreover, the discussion reinforced the value of strategic thinking and problem-solving in a collaborative environment. The exchange of ideas highlighted how diverse perspectives can lead to innovative solutions, a lesson I’ve since applied in my role at BEM REMA UPI. It was a reminder that leadership in any capacity demands not just knowledge, but the ability to engage others in meaningful, productive conversations. Reflecting on this experience, I realize how crucial it is to remain engaged with national and global issues. The discussion with Pertamina was not just an event but a catalyst that deepened my understanding of the intersection between policy and economic resilience, while also enhancing my capacity to contribute effectively in both academic and professional settings.

The GPA certificate, also known as the PRIMA 3 certificate in Indonesia, stands out for its enormous benefits in the food value chain of agriculture products. 1. Smallholder farmers - The GPA certificate provides farmers with a sense of security, offering easier market access and opening doors to potential partnerships with fast food restaurants or fresh vegetable distributors. These partnerships ensure a stable price for farmers, addressing the issue of fluctuating prices. By securing price stability, farmers can significantly improve theirs prosperity, feeling more secure and stable in the market. 2. Market Player - receive value for money product 3. Consumer - consume healthy food Moreover, the GPA certificate plays a crucial role in promoting a reduction in pesticide usage, fostering a strong sense of environmental responsibility and awareness among all stakeholders in the food value chain. This commitment to environmental responsibility makes us all feel more responsible and committed to sustainable practices. ASEAN GAP, SECURE WORLD WITH BETTER FOOD is the promise and potential of the GPA certificate in the food value chain.

I had the pleasure of being interviewed by SeaToday MCR where I shared some perspectives on Prabowo's presidency. On 20 October 2024, Indonesia witnessed a significant political shift with the election of Prabowo Subianto as its new president, with major implications for its foreign policy. However, how will foreign policy actually change under Prabowo? Unlike Joko Widodo, who primarily focused on domestic economic development, Prabowo may adopt a more active and decisive approach, particularly concerning issues like the South China Sea dispute, strengthening Indonesia’s defenses in the region. He may push for regional economic integration, aiming to solidify Indonesia’s leadership role within ASEAN (even though on this point we should be very attentive to how ASEAN will evolve in Prabowo's perspective). Surge for Water’s partners in Indonesia, particularly within the communities of Sumba, have done such an extraordinary job of providing our team with a depth of understanding when it comes to cultural, tribal, and spiritual traditions. It’s so important for our team to understand these aspects of the region and its people because they play a big part in how we work with and within these communities. One of the key ways we do this is through an "Ina Ama"—a deeply respected, inherited position within the local community. The Ina Ama is a clan leader, a mediator, and a guide all in one, trained in ancestral knowledge and tasked with overseeing important cultural and ceremonial protocols. Before we begin any work, Pak Agus (our Ina Ama) ensures that we follow the right processes and honor the specific customs and histories of each community. His role is critical in preventing misunderstandings and ensuring harmony, especially in regions where past conflicts still impact relationships today. By having Pak Agus on our team, we’re regularly reminded that the work we do is as much about how we do things as it is what we’re able to accomplish. We always want to ensure our approach is in line with the way each community operates before we even arrive. The cultural depth we navigate is as crucial as the safe water we work to provide. The Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JSSEZ) MoU was signed on 11 January 2024, and solid plans are expected to roll out at the end of the year. Most industry experts anticipate the final framework will provide investment, tax and custom duty incentives, regulatory flexibility, immigration relief, as well as reliable infrastructure support. Based on the political commitment of both governments and agencies (Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) and Invest Johor) to-date, and the complementary nature of the two economies within the business value chains (i.e., Singapore's international financial and innovative centre and Johor's infrastructure and trained workforce), the outlook of JSSEZ is exuberant, and it will be a game changer if it is well executed. Perhaps it will replicate the success of Shenzen or the Greater Bay Area? Businesses exploring the ASEAN market (which is among the fastest-growing regions in the world) or adopting the China + 1 strategy should definitely keep an eye.
