My clinical students and I discussed supervision in my family therapy class yesterday. This discussion included questions they would want to ask their potential clinical supervisors. Their list was excellent. I am sharing it here with the hope that other potential MSW students (and clinical supervisors) can also use them: What attributes did your supervisor have that you try to repeat? How would it be handled if you made a mistake as a supervisor? Could you share an experience of holding a supervisee accountable? What did you learn/what would you do differently? Could you talk about a challenging time you had with a supervisee? What did you learn? What are your personal limitations/boundaries? (i.e., times you are available, when can you be reached if there is a crisis client, etc.) How do you implement a culturally responsible lens (in crisis, specifically)? Share something you did well or poorly. How have you ensured that your notetaking is ethical?

As clinicians, our primary role is often seen as providing expert care and treatment. However, I believe there's another crucial element that sometimes gets overlooked: ensuring that our clients feel deeply cared for and loved. This might sound controversial, but I think it’s essential for clients to know that we genuinely care about them. Building trust and demonstrating consistent, heartfelt support can be just as important as the technical aspects of our work. When clients feel secure and valued, they are more likely to engage fully in their therapy or treatment. Reflecting on my own experiences, I've seen firsthand how powerful it is when adults in my life—regardless of their strictness—show up consistently with care and respect. This consistency fostered a sense of safety and allowed for growth and learning. In our roles as behavior technicians, BCBAs, and other professionals working with children, it's crucial that we bring this same level of commitment and empathy to our work every day. Let's remember that while our skills and strategies are vital, the way we show up for our clients emotionally can make a profound difference in their journey! The power of love and compassion and kindness is so powerful in creating positive change for those we work with. So my question is how do you show love 💕 for the clients whom you serve? #ClinicalCare #EmpathyInPractice #BuildingTrust #ClientRelationships #ProfessionalGrowth

This might upset some Physical Therapists and would love your thoughts. I was talking with a State Senator of PA who is a family friend and I asked him about Direct access legislation for PT's that was making its way through the Senate. I am paraphrasing but this is what he said. " Joseph everyone nowadays is asking for more responsibility with less work. Nurses want to be able to do the work that MD's do. Personal trainers want us to let them provide physical therapy services with no license. Everyone is asking us for more but doing less themselves." Now to provide some context as most of you know bills are rarely black and white in politics. Yes, I am in favor of Direct Access laws for PT but some power-hungry Physical Therapists muddy the waters by asking for too much. They want to write prescriptions, be a radiologist provide X-rays, and so on. It is also true that there is a strong lobby presence from the hospitals to prevent direct access for obvious reasons. That being said if all the PTs were in agreement and just focused only on direct access and not all of these other things I think they would have more success. #physicaltherapy #politics #directaccess #ptclinic #ptowner

Embracing Servant Leadership in Therapy: A Path to Excellence In the world of skilled nursing, the role of a therapist goes beyond just providing physical, occupational, and speech therapy. It's about embodying the essence of servant leadership - a philosophy that puts the needs of others first and empowers them to reach their full potential. Why is servant leadership crucial in therapy???? It fosters a culture of empathy, collaboration, and trust, creating a supportive environment where both therapists and patients thrive. By prioritizing the well-being and development of their team members, servant leaders in therapy inspire a sense of purpose and dedication that translates into exceptional patient care. As a therapist in a skilled nursing facility, I've witnessed firsthand the transformative power of servant leadership. By leading with humility, empathy, and a genuine desire to serve, we can make a lasting impact on the lives of our patients and colleagues. Interested in taking your facility to the next level? The only way to make change is by speaking up! Here’s a reminder of what we’re fighting for: 👉 Allowing Physical Therapists to order Durable Medical Equipment (DME) for their patients 👉 Protecting the titles DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy) and SPT (Student of Physical Therapy) and PTA (physical therapist assistant) 👉 Allowing Physical Therapists to conduct medication review, integration and understanding 👉 Modernizing language to clarify that Physical Therapists can order imaging, testing and PTA’s perform certain wound care. Here’s how you can help: https://loom.ly/8LanvoU #APTAColorado #ColoradoPhysicalTherapy #PhysicalTherapist #PhysicalTherapistAssistant #PhysicalTherapy #APTACO #advocacy #sunset #apta #StandUpForPT
