In Illinois, Black residents face a staggering disparity in #homelessness compared to their white counterparts, with nearly 8x's the likelihood of experiencing homelessness. This alarming trend isn't exclusive to Illinois; it echoes across the nation. Advocates, University of Illinois Chicago researchers, and State leaders, including Chief Homelessness Officer Christine Haley and IDHS Secretary Designate Dulce Maria Quintero, recently joined Gov. Pritzker to release the comprehensive report on Black Homelessness in Illinois. The report comes with an action plan to address the #inequities and increase pathways to #affordablehousing for all. Read it here: https://bit.ly/3ygIIs5
Christine Haley, State Homelessness Chief, Illinois Office to Prevent & End Homelessness, joined WTTW to discuss the racial disparities across Illinois’ homeless population. She was a key driving force behind a recently released study on Black Homelessness in Illinois. (link to https://lnkd.in/gvt74s-q.) Watch the interview here: https://lnkd.in/gMjENsx5

I’m reflecting on an important truth—homelessness is not the result of poor choices or personal failures. Rather, it’s a symptom of deeper systemic issues such as the affordability crisis in housing, under-resourced support systems, and the persistence of poverty. Those experiencing homelessness often face complex challenges, including mental health issues, substance dependence, and trauma. It’s easy to think that simply providing shelter is enough, but real solutions lie in sustained long-term housing that is safe and warm, and which also comes with access to crucial support networks, employment opportunities, and healthcare. Housing is a fundamental human right, and I firmly believe that everyone deserves a safe and stable place to call home—without preconditions. I’m incredibly proud to lead Downtown Community Ministry, an organisation filled with passionate and dedicated people delivering life-changing services such as Housing First, Sustaining Tenancies, health services, and outreach. We couldn’t do this important work alone. I’d like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our supporting organisations and partners, including the Wellington City Council, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Te Aro Health Centre, Kainga Ora, Emerge Aotearoa and the New Zealand Dental Association. Together, we’re creating a lasting impact in the lives of those who need it most. #WorldHomelessDay #HousingIsAHumanRight #CommunitySupport #HousingFirst #EndingHomelessnesstogether #DCMWellington

"Homelessness is not the result of poor choices or personal failures" It's a basic part of what's been called the 'social compact' between the State and citizens in Aotearoa that those of us who are struggling are supported, that those in need are provided for. The State applies a scarcity lens, profferring funding in certain areas only and only in accordance with party politics. As such it is rarely, if ever, available to meet demand, and as an intended or unintended consequence, creates competition amongst those seeking services and support. In the health system, wait times are symptomatic of scarcity funding. In housing the waitlist is symptomatic of scarcity funding. In re homelessness public housing supply targets (which is the key infrastructure response, but not the only one) never imagine meeting present demand let alone future demand. The compact is broken.

Today, on 9/11, we remember the lives lost and the incredible resilience that followed one of our nation's darkest days. The spirit of compassion that brought us together after the tragedy remains a powerful reminder of how we can support each other in times of crisis. At Open Doors, we believe that same spirit can help us address another urgent challenge: homelessness. #NeverForget #CommunityResilience #OpenDoors #OpenDoorsAtlanta

If you want something different, you have to do something different. Helping people experiencing homelessness get the resources, housing and treatment they need isn't a mystery. We know how to do this. What we are lacking is a coordinated effort to bring together our resources to rapidly triage, assess and provide help to the over 10,000 men, women and children living unhoused in our San Diego region. Sunbreak Ranch is a well-thought through concept for providing a safe, temporary place for those living in encampments across our region to relocate to where they can have their basic needs met AND be surrounded by all the services they need in one place. Let's get smart about this San Diego and build Sunbreak Ranch ASAP. Humans are suffering right now, scared for their lives and perishing on our streets. Here's what we need to do: 1. Secure a piece of land in San Diego County that is centrally located (mid-county) and offers space for SunBreak Ranch. 2. Raise funds to cover the construction of SunBreak Ranch and operating/maintenance expenses for 2 years to start (Reach out to SunBreak Ranch leadership for the amount they need). 3. Build the site. 4. Open it up for those experiencing homelessness. 5. Provide triage services, temporary housing and a safe, dignified community for these individuals and families to rest, heal, rebuild trust and discover a path for their life off the streets. 6. Help these individuals find jobs, healthcare services, education, long-term care or another path based on their individual circumstances. 7. Provide compassionate, healing support and inspiration. I'm in to help Sunset Ranch accomplish its goals. Are you? #sunsetranch #sandiego #homelessness #endinghomelessness #wecandothis Drew Moser John (J.C.) Peterson HomeAid San Diego HomeAid

President's Post: In the words of Michael Block, the CEO of All Roads (formerly the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless), "Fighting homelessness can sometimes seem like pushing a big rock up a steep hill. So when there’s good news, it’s great to point it out and build on it." And this is some positive progress to report: https://lnkd.in/gfvYZXtG. The Boulder Chamber's partnership with All Roads in support of the Day Service Center and in creating housing options, like the Bluebird permanent supportive building, are elements of the progress we can make through collaborative efforts to meet the needs of our unhoused population and to address the business and community impacts of homelessness. Let's keep pushing forward!
