Abuse is a neglectful or intentional act that causes harm and distress, it could be done to anyone and our older persons are not an exemption. Elder Abuse can be refered to as an intentional or neglectful act by trusted persons,caregivers or family that causes harm to the older persons. Elder abuse occurs in various forms such as; physical,psychological, financial, sexual or Neglect. Signs of elder abuse may include but not limited to; Injures, bruises, fear or anxiety towards a family member or caregiver, signs of depression, malnutrition, genital infections or injuries, withdrawal from social activities, and many more. As members of the society, it is our duty and responsibility to keep a close eye on our elder adult and to address any form of adult abuse when we recognize any. We owe to our elderly persons to fight against any form of abuse inflected on them and to create awareness against adult abuse. ................................................. There are many stereotypes associated with the elderly persons and aging as a whole. Classifying our elderly persons with these stereotypes is like fitting them inti boxes, thereby limiting their extraordinary abilities. There is a need to have a mental change towards these said "limitations" towards our older persons. Key pathways include enhancing organizational, programmatic, and adaptive capacity, alongside developing effective fundraising strategies to ensure financial stability. It's essential to design new programs and improve existing ones, ensuring alignment with transition guidelines and child welfare guidelines. Success depends on engaging all stakeholders—Children staff, founders, donors etc—ensuring they have clarity on their roles and the future. Raising Awareness about Elder Line National Helpline 🚨 Elder Line: A National Helpline for Senior Citizens The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJ&E), in collaboration with the National Institute of Social Defence (NISD) and participating State/UT Governments, has launched Elder Line – a National Helpline for Senior Citizens (NHSC). This initiative is also supported by Tata Trusts, Vijayavahini Charitable Foundation, and NSE Foundation. Verbal abuse on the older person could be described as the use of words, tone or gesture to inflict emotional pains, distress, or intimidations to the older person. This form of abuse is the most common form of abuse towards the older adults. Verbal abuse includes; insulting, humiliating, blaming, threatening and often times, frequent arguments with the older person. This form of Abuse has serious psychological effect on the older persons, such as; anxiety, fear, depression and a sense of worthlessness. It is our duty to identify these abuse towards our elderly persons and fight for their rights and dignity to be protected. Our older adults are our responsibility and we should handle them with a lot of respect and love. ................................................. What happens after 18? For adults with disabilities, turning 18 can be a turning point filled with new challenges—for them and their caregivers. That’s why AWWA joined forces with Metta Welfare Association, MINDSG Ltd, Thye Hua Kwan Moral Charities, and TOUCH Community Services to take a closer look at the “post-18 cliff” in Singapore, and how we can all play a part in bridging the gap.  Thanks to insightful analysis by Tri-Sector Associates and funding support from SG Enable, the result is a study packed with ideas to inspire more innovative and impactful outcomes for adults with disabilities in Singapore. #WorldElderAbuseAwarenessDay On today's series we are still on forms of verbal abuse on older adults. Words have the ability to either make us or break us and this also applies to the older persons. Using hurtful words/gestures on an older adult oftentimes leaves scars on their emotions and this can lead to psychological effects. Verbal abuse on older persons always leads to fear, anxiety, a feeling of worthlessness, making them feel as though they were burdens to us their loved ones. Our older ones are at the most vulnerable state of their life's journey and we should learn to be more intentional towards caring for them and to choose our words, gestures and actions carefully. As members of the society we should always keep a keen eye on our older adults and identify when they are being abused in any form .
