Another fascinating episode of The End of Charity by Third Sector. This one is all about the political chokehold over charities. Organisations like Extinction Rebellion can organise at mass and disrupt at mass, to make their position clear - sometimes breaking the law to do so. But charities are seen as the ‘opposite of disruptive.” This quote by Rhodri Davies about campaigning organisations like Just Stop Oil stood out to me: “In the way that they are able to engage supporters & offer them clear opportunities to participate actively - that’s a real strength, at a time where a lot of people feel the relationship they have with charities is a bit passive. They want to have a sense of agency in doing something about an issue. It doesn’t feel enough to set up a direct debit or give regularly to a charity and get a quarterly magazine.” So how can charities who are involved in issues such as climate change or food poverty, give more agency to their supporters but within the parameters of the law? Living by the sea has been truly inspirational for me. Spending hours on the water rowing, sailing, and walking along the coastline has been a source of joy and motivation. Recently, starting the October Dip a day challenge has shed light on the state of our waters. It's clear that action is needed from all of us now more than ever. We all have the power to make a difference. Whether it's through donations, picking up and clearing away garbage, or being mindful of what we put down our drains, each small action contributes to a cleaner environment. As a continuation to my post from Monday where I shared about my involvement as a Board member for the School Garden Support Organization, I wanted to expand on my “why”. And why my purpose and passions are centered on supporting equitable learning, school gardens, sustainability, and representation. Today, the majority, ~70% of agricultural workers are foreign born migrants. They are the backbone of our food supply chain, yet often are not given basic human rights or access to the systems/programs we all take for granted. Often, they are the center of vitriolic language and unfair policies; Our farm workers do not receive the respect they deserve. I would like to see dignity and pride in farm work restored. I would like to see agriculture in all forms seen as a meaningful career path. An industry that is valued as significant and has high importance; And that we support through our education system. How can we honor our migrant workers, and the legacies of Caesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta? I think it starts by supporting organizations that teach youth the importance of gardens, farming, sustainability, and communities. From income inequality and unemployment to housing conditions, education, and access to healthcare, these are all factors that play a crucial role in exacerbating food insecurity. At the Franklin Food Bank, we recognize that addressing hunger alone isn’t enough.
