ESPORTS AND THE PERFORMANCE OF PLAY Women in Games’ mission is to bring together agents of change, advocates, men and boys, champions, experts and grass-roots organisations for new dialogues focused on achieving fairness and equity 💪 Our recent 20th Anniversary Global Women in Games Conference Conference PLAY GROUNDED explored the phenomenon of Play and Play Spaces: How play is designed, developed and published, where play happens, and what play is and can be, through the Women in Games Lens. The event provided an arena for discussion of the functions of play across multiple strands: from concept to publication – the makers and the players – the pleasure [of playing] and the pain [of toxic spaces]. 📢 This panel session – Esports and the Performance of Play – posed the question: If all the world's a stage, where are women players at in their Esports journey? The session featured Dr Lindsey Darvin, Ph.D. (Department of Sport Management), Sarah Kneller (MZMA/August Interactive), Vladyslava Zakhliebina (OG Esports Team Manager) and Karina Ziminaite (Z1MT Creative Studio) 📢 Many thanks again to all the wonderful speakers who contributed their valuable knowledge and expertise to this eye-opening anniversary conference 🎉 #WIGConf24 #womeningames #gamesindustry #gamedev #womeninesports

As a big supporter of women in gaming, I love to see it getting the mainstream coverage it deserves ♥️ Both Sky News and BBC covered the Red Bull Instalock tournament that our team (G2 Gozen) won. Another trophy in the cabinet 🔥 But it's not just about the trophy. It's about showing what is possible. Getting visibility. I might have already told you this story, but a few months ago, I was watching LEC with my daughter. And just as the teams started to play, she asked me: "daddy, can girls play as well? Or is it only for boys?" And it was like a slap. Watching esports for the past twelve years, I just got used to it. You might say - there are no physical attributes holding girls back. They can compete with guys anytime they want. Which is true, but there is an asterisk to it. 🟢Representation and visibility🟢 As you can see from my example, many girls are not even aware that competitive gaming is something they can do. They have no role models. Or rather they didn't have in the past. So when boys can grow up wanting to play like Caps or Faker, girls can now grow up wanting to play like Mimi. Our Valorant star that you can see in this clip. What coverage like this brings to the table will have incredible impact down the road. And I'm glad to see G2 Esports on the forefront of this change. It also brings an almost untapped market for brands to engage with. I'm really excited for the future. When do you think we will see the first mixed teams in top tier tournaments?

Sports video games are the best way to discover new disciplines. Generations of sportsmen and sports journalists say that these productions inspired them to become interested in their main field. Still, it is necessary to mention millions of spectators who all started from virtual plays. Amazon is going to release a documentary about the impact of Madden NFL games into American football at the end of the week. Why these games are so vital to the whole industry? Well, it all comes down to accessibility. The best example can be found in Backyard Baseball ‘97. At first sight, game lacks quality to the productions released in the nineties, not talking about current ones. Its interface reminds an interactive encyclopedia, licences of professional teams and players are non-existent. However, after decades it played out for the game’s biggest advantage. All actions are made in the point-and-click style, which is easy to understand for kids and adults. The youngest ones will be more incentivized by playing characters their age. Teams are picked out of 30 players of different races, sexes, ancestry and even disability levels. Of course, some part of reality needs to be sacrificed, but this is only an arcade video game, which has done a great job in the area of inclusion. Almost every American child with computer access at the end of the 20th century knew that Latino player Pablo Sanchez was the best player in the game. It helped to fight all negative bias, not only in sports. And researching the modern sports video game and their attitude towards showing female competition I discovered that Backyard Baseball ‘97 was a major step forward in implementing athletes of different backgrounds. The remake of the game was recently released on the Steam platform. Due to the lack of access to source code current rightsholders had to sell the game without any improvements, the modern compatibility is guaranteed by using special emulators. Similar issues show us that we can lose not only a part of virtual entertainment history, but also sports history. What were your favorite retro sports games? Share it in the comments.#LearningSprintIOCYL #IOCYoungLeaders

Gamers, I need your help! 🎮 There is a topic that keeps me up at night — mixed-gender esports teams. What's the deal with it? I know many of you are involved in esports, and I'd love to hear your thoughts. 🏆 Are mixed-gender teams forbidden? Are there rules that prevent them? Tournament organizers, esports team managers, talent coaches — what's your take? 👾 And to my fellow gamers, what do you think? Why don't we see mixed-gender teams at major public events? Is there an unbreakable belief that games aren't for women? Or is it a question of abilities? Let's start this conversation! I can’t wait to hear your opinion and investigate this question more! 🔍
