We clearly have 6 years to hit the targets of our #SDGs. How are we #performing in relation to these targets? Are we on the #right trajectory? as a globe? as a continent? how about at country level? This will clearly inform how we should set our targets and have concrete strategies to ensure that this is achieved. How do we do this? 1. We need to have #periodic reviews to see how we are performing in relation to the realization of these targets, maybe after every 3 years? 2. Identify #strongholds that help us realize these goals and #enhance them. 3. #Identify the weaknesses that #deter us from achieving these goals and find solutions to these challenges. 4. #Partner and #learn from well performing continents or countries to ensure the weak performing continents/countries can improve their initiatives. Therefore, it is important to note that #Agriculture and #Environment plays a key role in the realization of these targets hence #Must be prioritized, bearing in mind value and respect for #Indigenous knowledge and #ways of life including #indigenous seeds as they play a critical role in the priority areas, that is, #Agriculture and #Environment. Achieving the 17 #SDGs by 2030 might be unattainable if the world leaders and other stakeholders do not make extra effort to swim again the tide considering the numerous challenges inhibiting the attainment of each of the goals.

The Sustainable Developmemt Goal ( SDG) framework, adopted in 2015, is the first genuinely global sustainable development policy framework which guides all countries - rich and poor- towards achieving agreed goals and targets across a wide range of policy areas by 2030. This means that countries everywhere have SIX years remaining in which to achieve the ambitions of this timely policy framework. Unfortunately the Covid pandemic slowed progress over a number of years towards the achievement of the SDGs. In my opinion, the failure of the international community to fully operationalise SDG 17 ( Global Partnership and Means of Implementation) was one of the main reasons why SDG progress lags well behind the original high ambition of this sustainable development framework. SDG 17 should be THE goal which particularly engages governments and international institutions, along with other key stakeholder groups. This goal has the potential to be a real accelerator of SDG implementation, given its focus on trade, data, technology transfer, financing for development, capacity- building of CSOs & other stakeholders, amongst other issues. In a political age which is characterised by serious threats to the existing multilateral order, the prioritisation of SDG 17 could serve to promote international co-operation and facilitate the transfer of expertise, knowledge and essential resources and technologies between different regions and countries of the world. It is time to pay attention to what will replace the global SDG framework in 2030. Whatever shape the successor framework of the SDGs takes, the key elements of SDG 17 ( Global Partnership & Means of Implementation) should be included and prioritised within it. The next six year period will be over in a flash. Let’s hope the intellectual and the practical work to replace the global SDG framework has already begun at the international level!
