The foundry market is in turmoil. For years, we have been highlighting and proving that Intel has struggled with the performance and development of its new processors compared to IBM Power8 / 9 / 10 (but also AMD / ARM). Now, it has made a shrewd decision, much like its competitors did some time ago: to design their chips but ask its rivals but partners (TSMC) to build them, and continue investing in hopes of one day manufacturing advanced chips outside of Taiwan. I suppose this would eventually allow China to create a 'Hong Kong 2.0' scenario with them, xD. That's why, despite the setback and despite being an #IBMPower processor enthusiast, I believe Intel has a future as a foundry.. and IBM might buy it afterwards.

It's been more than a decade since I moved from the semiconductor industry to the world of software - but I still find it fascinating to see the giants of the industry battle it out. What a fall for Intel... I really enjoyed reading this article from semianalysis.com about Intel trying to find a new life as a foundry. It will be a tricky path, and not just for reasons like access to capital which are (very well) outlined in the article. The cultural shift required to go from their (proud) X86 IDM legacy model to an ecosystem oriented foundry business is a huge undertaking. What's your perspective - do you think they can make it? Or too big of a shift? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Intel 18A powered on and healthy Intel Foundry achieves major Intel 18A process milestones, with next-gen client and server chip production tracking for 2025. Over the past week, Intel Foundry announced major milestones for the Intel 18A process technology. Both Panther Lake, a future AI PC processor, and Clearwater Forest, an upcoming server processor, are out of the fab and have powered-on and booted operating systems. The news is great for Intel Foundry, which can use the advances to market 18A technology to customers. In July, Intel released the 18A Process Design Kit (PDK) 1.0, design tools that enable foundry customers to harness the capabilities of RibbonFET gate-all-around transistor architecture and PowerVia backside power delivery in their designs. Meanwhile, the first external customer product is expected to tape out on Intel 18A in the first half of next year. Intel 18A is Intel’s leading-edge process technology. It is expected to return the company to process leadership. Its success is a keystone to one of Intel’s Top Jobs for 2024: Stewards of Moore’s Law – Enable 5N4Y and Beyond. “We are pioneering multiple systems foundry technologies for the AI era and delivering a full stack of innovation that’s essential to the next generation of products for Intel and our foundry customers,” Kevin O’Buckley, SVP and GM of Foundry Services, said on the Intel Newsroom. “We are encouraged by our progress and are working closely with customers to bring Intel 18A to market in 2025.” Access to the Intel 18A PDK 1.0 allows the company’s electronic design automation (EDA) and intellectual property (IP) partners – such as Cadence and Synopsys – to update their tools and design flows to enable external foundry customers to begin their Intel 18A chip designs – another critical milestone for the foundry business. Recent foundry updates also represent progress for Intel Products, which have Panther Lake and Clearwater Forest products on track to start production in 2025. The milestones for both products were reached less than two quarters after tape-out. In successfully booting operating systems without additional configurations or modifications, Panther Lake and Clearwater Forest clearly signal the health of Intel 18A. In a separate Q&A on the Intel Newsroom, O’Buckley was asked about the importance of Intel 18A. His response cemented the technology’s role in the company’s future: “In Intel 18A, we are pioneering multiple technologies that are essential to our customers and that will be a significant step toward bringing us back to process leadership: RibbonFET gate-all-around transistors for device performance and PowerVia backside power technology to enable new device interconnect methods. We also have next-gen EMIB
