2025 is off to a flying start! Jetstar Airways have announced an additional 34,000 seats between the Sunshine Coast and Melbourne, thanks to a combination of new flights and the use of the larger Airbus A321. Commencing in March until June 2025, these new seats will uplift capacity by 14% between the two destinations compared to the same time in 2024. The addition of 34,000 seats will boost connectivity and greater flexibility for thousands of travellers each week. Trondheim, Norway, perhaps 1977. A time when flying wasn’t just travel—it was an experience. For a few years, TAP Air Portugal ran what we fondly called “Operação Escandinávia”—bringing thousands of frozen Norwegians and Swedes from their icy winters to the sun-drenched beaches of the Algarve. Our Boeing 727-100s would touch down in beautiful but remote airports like Trondheim and Bodø, far enough north to offer us unforgettable sights, such as the magical Aurora Borealis. But the journey itself was where the real stories happened. Back then, alcohol was expensive and strictly controlled in Scandinavia, so for many passengers, the holiday started the moment they boarded the aircraft. TAP crew, with our usual Portuguese hospitality, would offer Aquavit—a strong Nordic spirit with over 40% alcohol—free of charge (yes, free, Ryanair!). I don’t recall how many bottles were stocked onboard, but I do know they rarely survived beyond halfway through the flight. When the Aquavit ran out, Portuguese wine stepped in to save the day—another generous courtesy of TAP. At the end of the journey, landing in Faro was a sight to behold. Some passengers, overcome with joy and perhaps the effects of our inflight hospitality, would step off the aircraft, drop to their knees, and kiss the Portuguese ground. Never before (or since) has the concept of a “Promised Land” seemed so real. This photo captures an era where flying was about far more than just getting from A to B—it was about connection, culture, and creating unforgettable memories. It’s a reminder of the golden days of aviation, where hospitality defined the journey, and airlines like TAP turned flights into stories that still make us smile decades later.
