Polls show rural voters favor Donald Trump, but that’s not stopping Kamala Harris from trying to win them over. On Wednesday, the Harris campaign announced it is investing more than $370 million on advertising in battleground states. More than $200 million of that will be used on digital ads across multiple platforms. Campaign officials say that it is the largest digital advertising investment in political history. Political parties were urged to submit lists of areas requiring new polling stations to the Election Officer’s office. "Door-to-door verification by BLOs will update the voter list, including new 18-year-old voters," Mittal explained. The revision process includes removing shifted, duplicate, and deceased voters from the list. Key dates announced include draft voter list publication on July 25 and final publication on August 20, 2024. 🗳 The election is 18 days away, and for me, that means diving into politics reporting – something relatively new. Today, a story I wrote about down-ballot elections is out in The Daily Yonder. I cover how these local and state-level races are shaping up for candidates on both sides of the ticket hoping to win support from rural voters. In a year where rural identity is in conversation as both vice presidential candidates claim rural roots, I also explore how down-ballot candidates navigate local issues amidst hyper-partisan national politics. Check out the rest of my story here. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ekmD_2g3

Will Trumpism result in new states being created? Several counties in Illinois voted to attempt to break away from that state to form a new state. ***** The question, "Shall the board of [the county] correspond with the boards of other counties of Illinois, outside of Cook County, about the possibility of separating from Cook County to form a new state and to seek admission to the Union as such, subject to the approval of the people?" was featured on the ballots of voters in counties outside Cook County. Seven counties voted in favor of secession, and in six of those counties, more than 70% of voters were in favor of the measure, WWBT-TV reported. ***** https://lnkd.in/g6SWDCVy While it seems unlikely that the counties voting to secede from Illinois will be successful, it is nevertheless instructive that most counties outside of Cook County (Chicago) voted for Trump. However, Chicago’s population so completely dominates that how the city votes tends to be how the state goes in Presidential elections. Some voters want a wee bit more representation than that.

When I used to knock on doors for a political party, we would spend all winter trying to get round as many houses as possible and ask politely who you vote for. By the week of the election, we hoped to have met about 90% of people at least once. I never minded if someone slammed the door in my face or told to go away - I would just put them down as "against" and move on. The process was about identification and I can identify a slammed door in the face. You have some interesting questions about policy and get to help people. But on the whole, you are just identifying. After a long winter of door-knocking, it meant that in Election week we could go back and ask our supporters to vote for us. We'd also have segmented and targeted messages for our opponents supporters. And we knew which houses to tip toe past. On Election Day, when you go to vote, some nice people collect your identifying number or house number. Every hour we collect those and mark you off as having voted. We can then keep a track of how its going. We also know we don't need to knock on your door as you have already voted. So that nice high contact rate in the winter is very useful. It's a bit like a marathon runner who has put in the miles in the winter. If its going badly, we might go to another area and help there where its closer. If its going well, then we might do a bit more then go to another area. If it's close then we might be the one asking for help. In marketing terms, the whole thing is a process of Identify, Segment, Target. We identify if you vote and who you vote for. Then we segment you into targettable groups. Then we target you with the message. That is the plan and the theory anyway. When we did it well, we didn't really need to go to the count as we knew what the result would be. On Thursday night and Friday morning, the well-organised and well-drilled constituency parties will know how they have got on. A few weeks after polling day, the parties can go to the Council and buy the "marked register". That's the list of all the voters in the constituency who did or did not vote. It's just a photocopy of that list of voters at the polling station with a line through your name if you voted. And, like the marathon runner, the whole process can start all over again. #Identify #Target #Segemt

Today, AARP Nevada released a 2024 statewide election survey that shows candidates for President, U.S. Senate, and state races should pay close attention to Nevadans ages 50 and older, and the issues they care about. The 50+ voting bloc holds an outsized importance to this year’s election – 85% of Nevadans 50+ are “extremely motivated” to cast a vote in November, significantly higher than the 60% of voters 18-49. With the races being so close this year, appealing to high-turnout voters should be a major campaign priority. https://lnkd.in/guJNSZuZ

FRESNO AND TULARE COUNTY – Mineral King Publishing is making it easy for residents to keep up with local election results as ballots are counted throughout the evening on Election Day and beyond. Results from Congressional, State Assembly, county, city council, boards of education and local ballot measures will be updated below as vote tallies come in from the Fresno and Tulare County Registrar of Voters. A new post will be made approximately every two hours, as new vote counts are released. Updates will continue until the county finalizes its vote count. For races that span multiple counties, both district and local results are included. District results — which will be listed first — mean the vote tallies for the entire district; local results are specific to Fresno County. Races will be “called” for a candidate — designated with an asterisk (*) — when Mineral King Publishing has determined the candidate will receive the majority of the votes in the race. It is important to note that no results are official until certified by the county elections office, which has until Dec. 5 to do so. Ballots may continue to be counted for several days after the close of polls. UPDATE: The results shown below are from the final election night vote count released by the county elections office at 12:30 a.m. Nov. 6. The Fresno County Registrar of Voters plans to release its next update before 5 p.m. on Nov. 7. The county has an estimated 98,000 ballots remaining to count. You can see the results

With the rapidly changing electoral landscape of the past few months, pundits have rightfully focused on the critical role of voters of color as swing voters who will determine the outcome of the 2024 election. In particular, AAPI voters may have the power to shape the outcome of the presidential election and control of both chambers of Congress. How AAPI Voters Could Decide the 2024 Election

They' Off! Traditionally Labor Day is the start of political campaigns. Not this year. Candidates have been hard at work on every level. The primary focus of the media and hopefully the voters…have been the presidential campaign. This is a historical election for a couple of reasons. First, the presidential election is close…and likely to remain so. Therefore, it is important for voters to consider this when they vote. Because if no presidential candidate has 270 electoral votes the U. S. House of Representatives in accordance to Article II, Section 2 of Constitution will decide. That’s why it’s important who represents you in the House side of Congress. Each state will have one vote. A majority is necessary to determine the President. Secondly, after the 2020 election controversy several states revised how elections are to be conducted. This has caused a lot of confusion. For example, in Florida a law passed in 2021 cancelled all standing requests for vote-by-mail ballots after the 2022 elections. Now voters are required to request mail ballots every election cycle. Adding to the confusion is election supervisors can remove voters inactive for two federal elections. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR STATE. Finally, here is why it’s serious who voters elect to the U. S. House of Representatives. Let’s say a state’s House delegation has 12 members…six being Democrats and six Republicans. They must agree among themselves which candidate for President will get their states one vote. The bottom line…in case the presidential election goes to the House of Representatives a voter should realize who they send to the House is casting their vote for president. The next President may be chosen because of your vote.
