Farming has always been a passion of mine, shaped by my upbringing on the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia. I’ve experienced firsthand the challenges and rewards that come with working in the industry. After years of working in the industry, I realised how much farmers like myself needed a better way to manage their operations. That’s what led me to create FarmTrak—a tool designed to make farm management simpler, more organised, and less stressful. From tracking grain and storage to managing assets like fuel tanks and equipment, FarmTrak is built with real farming needs in mind. What makes this journey even more exciting is seeing the positive impact it’s already having. I’m passionate about helping farmers stay on top of their work so they can focus on what matters most: growing, producing, and thriving. Thank you for supporting FarmTrak, a South Australian startup built for farmers, by a farmer. 🌾 #FarmTrak #AgTech #AustralianFarmers

Early in my investing journey, I backed a startup in the vertical farming space, Robotany—later rebranded as Fifth Season. The idea of fully automated vertical farming was exciting, but it raised a critical question: how much does automation really improve margins? As it turned out, replacing natural sunlight with artificial lighting is a costly hurdle that heavily impacts profitability. As highlighted in this recent Axios piece on Bowery, even some of the biggest names in the industry are facing challenges with scaling profitably. Today, with only a few players like Plenty still in the game, I'm left wondering: can vertical farming truly be sustainable, or is the cost structure simply too challenging for long-term viability? #VerticalFarming #SustainableTech #AgTech

🚜🌾 Taking the guesswork out of paddock planning We’re excited to introduce SKAN Farming Logistics Pty Ltd, one of the exciting innovative companies involved in our GroundUp program, supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC). The WA-based agtech startup has developed an AI-powered platform that automatically generates the best paddock paths for growers. PaddockPlan – Live analyses paddock shapes and obstacles to instruct operators on the most efficient way to work their paddock. By using this tech to optimise paddock paths, farmers can reduce the amount of time spent on machinery, resulting in significant cost savings for those with big operations. Reduced machine hours also mean lower carbon emissions. Young farmer Ryan Skamp, who founded the startup with his software engineer friend, Lachlan Ross, recently spoke to Farm Weekly about how he came up with the idea for the platform during a typically chaotic harvest late last year. “We look to a future that nourishes people physically, mentally and emotionally, moving towards holistic and circular systems and away from industrialised, extractive ones.” With first-hand experience of not having access to land themselves, the team Planton Farm in the south Shropshire hills is committed to helping more people grow land-based businesses and feel the benefits of being connected to nature every day. They’re a busy bunch, managing a herd of pasture-raised Aberdeen Angus cattle and recently planted a food forest combining chicken foraging and food trees/shrubs. And they’re currently busy putting in 25 acres of wood pasture and replacing a lost traditional orchard. They're also focused on education – Planton's Clare Hill is co-founder of the pioneering regenerative agriculture training programme Roots of Nature. Read our Farm in Focus on Planton here: https://lnkd.in/eN2tsfr9 Got a business that could fit into Planton’s vision of refocusing farming back to its roots?
