109 days, 3 work trips and 6 cities later since my first day back at work, here are my three current takeaways on global innovation: 1. NOW is the time to create and harness deep tech solutions to drive critical change. We need courageous entrepreneurs. We need bold ideas to come out from universities and research institutes. Under our Global Innovation Network, as we widen pathways for Singapore based startups to bring solutions to global markets , we welcome foreign deep tech startups who are keen to deploy solutions in health, climate, adv manufacturing etc in and through Singapore. 2. As an agency that champions startups and innovation, we should carry that mindset into our processes, projects and our daily lives. At the recent #Taftie conference on #sustainability in Lugano, we were challenged to walk the talk to support sdg goals too. 3. Partnerships are our bedrock. I thank my predecessor, Jonathan for building up our current network of nodes and cross border R&D. I now have the privilege of leveraging this connectivity to scale impact. After all, the problems we need to solve will require large scale and disruptive solutions that will be cross border and multi sectoral. We need a diverse pool of deep innovation champions to uplift communities and economies. Finding and connecting with like minded partners is absolutely critical. Over the last few days in Europe, I was grateful to connect with our partners #start2 and #innovateUK, as well as founders, funders, academia, growth builders etc that welcomed us into conversations so we could spark new ideas. Post discussions, we are excited to embark on new projects with them so we better support startups and IP to go to market. And last but absolutely not least, I can't talk about partnerships without mentioning my amazing and passionate Global Markets colleagues who go the extra mile to help Singapore growth enterprises build, bridge and connect in their respective markets. Despite how busy they were, they made time to join us in our meetings and their perspectives undoubtedly enriched our conversations. “You’ve got to be in it, to win it”..... as the saying goes. And so it is with the Singapore FinTech Festival, which just wrapped up for another year. Speaking with the taxi drivers taking me to the conference each day, many shared their amazement that SFF takes up the entire six halls of the Singapore EXPO centre: that’s how big it is, involving up to 40,000 people. Amongst the fray, it was also awesome to see some Aussie representation, including FinTech Australia, Austrade South Asia | Australian Trade and Investment Commission, and Your Financial Wellness who won the #MAS hackcelerator award for takling societal issues. It’s a sensory overload through a sea of booths, bright lights, and punters on phones trying to nail down their next meeting. Everyone is a buyer and seller at the same time. Despite the spruik, innovation is genuinely being seeded, scaled and shared. Here’s an example: if I was going to the Singapore Expo in one of the above taxis 10 years ago, I’d probably be only able to pay in cash. Now I can use my watch or phone. So when we hear about the next sand-boxed tech trial at these conferences, don’t yawn. Instead, think of your ease of payments nowadays. These ideas were being discussed at the first SFF nearly 10 years ago and are now a reality. The conference also wraps up just as the US Fed cut interest rates for the second time in a row. It’s clear that Southeast Asia is fast becoming one of the world’s payment and technology innovation hubs, but it definitely needs an investment heart-primer after three years of funding being hollowed out from the higher rate cycle. With the lower interest rate "punch bowl" firmly back on the table, you’d hope that private investment will return with it. This is important because further building Southeast Asia’s innovation economy is not a goal in itself: instead, it means more people can forge their own start-ups literally through their phone. This achieves a lot: it builds employment, brings people on to the financial grid, and builds a swathe of new entrepreneurs. These are all good things, but it needs existing payments and tech friction to be removed, along with confident private capital investors willing to swing in behind these start-ups. That’s the value of conferences like the Singapore Fintech Festival: whilst there is a lot of visual and verbal noise: ideas are being surfaced, relationships are being built, and policy is being formed. Despite the long week and travel, you can't help feeling energised by that, along with bumping into so many familiar faces. Next year, SFF will enter its 10th year. Like any ongoing concept, it may need to be refined and tinkered to sustain the energy.
