Join Prof. Pinar Acar and me at the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition (IMECE) on Nov 17-21, 2024, in Portland, OR, USA, for our session on "Multifunctional Structures for Space and ISAM." We invite researchers to submit their abstracts on multifunctional structures for space applications. The topics of interest range from analytical and design studies to computational modeling and experimental validations. Our focus is on nature-inspired adaptive/multifunctional structures, art-inspired structures (like Origami foldable designs), ultra-thin ply composites, metamaterials, Additive Manufacturing in space, designs for space habitats, and more (not an exhaustive list). Here is the session description: Architected materials (mechanical metamaterials) are an emerging class of innovative materials that exhibit extraordinary properties. These materials can be designed to be ultra-stiff, ultra-lightweight, and even respond to external stimuli through tailoring geometry and topology rather than changing composition. This session focuses on materials that show exceptional behavior and have the potential to be applied in aerospace structures. 🚀 Excited to Share Our Latest Publication! 🚀 I'm thrilled to announce that our paper titled "Aerodynamic Shape Optimization in Transonic Conditions Through Parametric Model Embedding" has been published in the Aerospace Science and Technology journal! In this research, we introduce a novel approach to tackling aerodynamic shape optimization by leveraging the Parametric Model Embedding (PME) method. PME offers a significant advantage by reducing the dimensionality of the design space while maintaining a clear connection to the original design parameters. Our results demonstrate improved aerodynamic performance, especially in transonic regimes, through more efficient optimization processes. Fachkongress Composite Simulation: Insights from the 10th edition Our colleague, Kai Steinbach, presented at the 10th Congress on Composite Simulation, which took place online. His topic focused on the "Numerical and Experimental Investigation of the Load-Bearing Capacity of Co-Consolidated Thermoplastic Threads." The presentation highlighted the intricacies and challenges in designing thermoplastic threads. It demonstrated how a simplified computational approach not only yielded reliable results but also showcased excellent alignment between experimentation and theory. Organized by Allianz Faserbasierte Werkstoffe Baden-Württemberg (AFBW) e.V., Composites United, and CAE-Forum, the 10th Fachkongress Composite Simulation featured key discussions on "Component and Process Simulation" and "Material and Microstructure Modeling." Experts from academia and industry addressed critical aspects of material, process, and structural simulation, including crash and virtual approval. The ZwickRoell Z100 universal testing machine is used for CFRP tests at the Institute of Aeronautical Engineering at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich. The objective: determination of material characteristics at room and cryogenic temperatures with forces of up to 100 kN.

How do fatigue damage zones in #composites evolve? Fatigue plays an important role in various composite structures - from #marine and #aerospace to especially #windenergy applications. Understanding the underlying mechanisms at the microscopic scale is thus key to improving future structural components made of fibre-reinforced plastics (FRPs). As part of the 21st European Conference on Composite Materials (#ECCM21), I will be presenting a hybrid analytical-numerical approach to model the formation and evolution of fatigue damage zones in unidirectional FRPs. The approach is based on the fibre-matrix debond crack growth at the fibre scale and extends it to a multiple-fibre arrangement. I want to thank my co-authors Prof. Bent F. Sørensen from DTU and Prof. Klaus Drechsler from TUM for their helpful support. I am looking forward to a great conference in Nantes, France. 💡 Ton C. is with CIMNE's Aeronautical, Marine, Automotive, and Energy Engineering Research Cluster. In his Final Master’s Thesis, Mr. Creus has made significant strides in the field of metamaterial design in the hyperelastic regime. Under the guidance of Dr. Ester Comellas and Dr. Àlex Ferrer, Ton has studied and implemented hyperelasticity in a topology optimization toolbox, with the long-term goal of using this tool as part of the topology optimization process.
