The morning plenary with International Association of Universities in Tokyo on Universality, diversity and interdependence demonstrated dramatic changes in the academic landscape, many working against a global academic ethos. Hence it was encouraging to lead a session trying to find a road to reinvigorate the power of knowledge based democratic development though Open science. When you ask a development professional why they do what they do, you can get all kinds of answers — everything from “This place changed my life” to “I believe in our mission” to “I love helping people pursue their passions.” However, when it comes to higher education, the answer to this question is usually the same — “For the students!” Education has a profound and transformational impact on our lives and as current and former students, we all remember educational experiences that changed our lives, our beliefs, our interests, our professional trajectories. The Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV’s annual Student Research Symposium is one such experience. For our students, it is an opportunity learn, explore, consider, and discover. This symposium is one of the hallmarks of our medical school experience, challenging students to question, hypothesize, investigate, and report their findings — the very essence of the scientific method writ large across the Undiscovered Country that is the healthcare landscape in Las Vegas and Southern Nevada. #UNLV

Well it's not everyday you get called one of the "UK's best scientific minds" and it has been very hard to keep this quiet for so long! However I am thrilled to be the #maths section president for the British Science Association British Science Festival this year and in awe of the company I'm in with the other Presidents. Being future-facing is a key piece of our Purpose at Mars: the world we want tomorrow starts with how we do business today. But… How does this shape our approach to scientific engagement? And what role can we play in supporting the next generation of scientists? As I head out to the 2024 Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings, I’m reflecting on our long-term partnership with Lindau that dates back over a decade. We’ve supported hundreds of young researchers attend the forum as “Mars Fellows” – where top young scientific talent can mingle with, share experiences with, and learn from Nobel prize winners. Every year, I'm struck by the passion, dedication and intellectual curiosity of our Fellows. The next generation of science leaders will be critical in solving some of the grand challenges we face as a society and achieving the world we want tomorrow. 𝐖𝐀𝐋𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐒𝐈𝐒𝐔𝐋𝐔 𝐔𝐍𝐈𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐈𝐓𝐘 𝐆𝐀𝐈𝐍𝐒 𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑 𝟐𝟎𝟎% 𝐆𝐑𝐎𝐖𝐓𝐇 𝐈𝐍 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐂𝐇 𝐎𝐔𝐓𝐏𝐔𝐓𝐒 Walter Sisulu University (WSU) has made remarkable strides in its research objectives, showing significant growth with over 300 research output units produced over the past three years. Placed in the rural Eastern Cape, the university is strategically positioned to tap into numerous economic development opportunities, contingent upon robust research activities. WSU Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof. Rushiella Nolundi Songca, in her opening address this year highlighted the institution's strategic approach to boosting research output, indicating a plan to intensify these efforts. Prof. Songca reported a 38.5% increase in research output units between 2019-2020 and a 42% increase between 2021-2022, driven by journal publications, book publications, and conference proceedings. WSU Research & Innovation director ProfSiyabonga Mxunyelwa highlighted the university's role in producing impactful research that addresses societal challenges in the Eastern Cape and beyond.
