Climate finance seeks to support climate change mitigation and adaptation. Watch Jim Hempstead, Managing Director of Global Project and Infrastructure Finance at Moody's Ratings, unpack the significance of sustainable financing of cities with CNA's Arnold Gay during the World Cities Summit (WCS) 2024. Mr Hempstead highlighted the importance of blended finance in the public-private partnership space, a model that has been successful in attracting necessary project capital. He added: “Cities should be investing more, sooner, because the return on these investments will be realised over time with better adaptation, better mitigation, and enhanced resilience of liveable cities.” https://lnkd.in/gAghK8fu #WCS2024 #WorldCitiesSummit #LiveableCities #SustainableCities

Emerging economies urgently need climate finance to fund the infrastructure needed for a low-carbon economy. But private capital isn’t flowing fast enough! A lack of consistency in definitions of “sustainable infrastructure” and company data is creating room for greenwashing and opacity - holding investors back. The FAST-Infra Label is designed to meet this challenge by building a consistent, transparent and globally applicable standard for projects demonstrating significant sustainability performance and outcomes. Building on the work of over 25 existing standards, frameworks and taxonomies, the Label aims to bridge the gap between the wide range of sustainable labels and frameworks that currently co-exist in the market to present a consolidated and reliable source for investors. Projects apply against a framework of 14 criteria spanning four dimensions of sustainability: Environmental, Social, Governance, and Adaptation and Resilience. Start your project’s journey with our complimentary self-assessment! The COP presidency just echoed long-standing calls for private sector actors to increase flows of capital toward the developing world. But that requires innovative delivery mechanisms. Which we don’t yet have at scale. Our research at WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development & BRAE over the summer found that the 'collaboration architecture' needed for this – one that brings together business, finance, government and funders to problem solve *creatively* together – is lacking. What does this architecture look like? There is a lot to play for as we build, test and learn, but fundamentally it is: - a link between corporate and national transition planning ecosystems - facilitated by a dedicated intermediary - safeguarded from political and financial turbulence - agile enough to adapt to local contexts. More details here (and forthcoming): https://lnkd.in/eedNMcab Great to see hard work and fantastic conversations over the summer starting to come fruition. 🔎 Zoom in on our ten policy priorities: Priority #4: Accelerate financial flows towards future-proof buildings. 🔗 Read our 10 policy priorities here! https://loom.ly/QumVsXs Futureproofing Our Buildings is not just a necessity—it's a huge opportunity. With an annual investment of €275 billion, we can transform our buildings and meet the EU's 2030 climate targets. While €75 billion public money has been committed, there's incredible potential to unlock more public and private funding for deep renovations, innovation, and energy efficiency. This gap should be addressed in the next Multiannual Financial Framework and other upcoming instruments, such as the Social Climate Fund. Strategic investments today will ensure a greener future, tackle energy poverty, and create a more sustainable, resilient Europe for all. Additionally, the EU Taxonomy should set ambitious lifecycle carbon thresholds, incentivising the reuse, repurposing, and renovation of buildings. As the increasing effects of climate change are becoming more prevalent , the financial sector is laying their eyes on it. Climate change is not just a concern related to nature, but also investment. Investors are acknowledging the seriousness of embodying sustainability into their spectrum to alleviate long-term financial threats connected to climate change. Green leases, which encourage energy adept efficiencies and sustainability in commercial projects, are acquiring recognition as a way to line up real estate investors with environmental objectives. By blending sustainability operations into investment schemes and embracing green leases, shareholders can not only lessen their carbon traces, but also build persistence against financial risks related to climate change. #climatechange #investment #sustainibility #realestateuk #london #uk
