After 20 years of supporting Calgary’s incredible entrepreneurs, we are thrilled to announce the expansion of Exmerce into Edmonton! A big welcome to Scott King, our new Regional Director for Alberta North (Edmonton). Scott brings invaluable business experience and leadership, and we’re confident he’ll help us make a positive impact on Edmonton’s business community. I’ll be honest—this expansion comes with its share of fear. As I’ve grown older and become a parent to two young kids, my appetite for risk has naturally lessened. There’s also comfort in sticking with what you know, but a few things have shifted my perspective: 1️⃣ Platform Calgary's Accelerator Program – Participating this past year has been transformational. The support and encouragement from Mina Demian, Ana Lokotkova, Jordy Grant and Andrea Oh, reignited my drive to take Exmerce to new heights. 2️⃣ My Amazing Team – They’re more than colleagues; they’re family. Their passion, belief in our purpose, and shared commitment inspire me every day. 3️⃣ A Shift in Mindset – I’ve realized that I’m not living life to its fullest unless I’m challenging myself to try new things. Growth starts where comfort ends. At Exmerce, our vision is clear: to empower Alberta entrepreneurs to thrive through the power of barter. More than that, we’re deeply committed to building community, fostering meaningful connections, and supporting businesses to grow together. We are so excited to bring this passion and purpose to Edmonton. Here’s to connecting and empowering even more entrepreneurs! #Exmerce #EdmontonBusiness #Entrepreneurship #BusinessBarter #BusinessGrowth #CommunityBuilding #SupportLocal #EntrepreneurLife #SmallBusinessSupport #BarterNetwork #Teamwork #PlatformCalgary #BusinessConnections #EmpoweringEntrepreneurs #AlbertaBusiness

The Missing Ingredient for Business Success in Nigeria After many years of studying Nigerian entrepreneurs, I’ve identified a common pattern that holds true for most. Nigerian entrepreneurs are generally great at coming up with a product. While they may not fully understand product innovation, they have a knack for developing products that markets should love—especially in the startup ecosystem. They’re also good at securing funds, whether it’s from personal savings, family, friends, or even “fools.” I’ve seen many entrepreneurs hustle for financing—whether through debt, equity, or grants—sometimes even acquiring funds they don’t really need. However, one crucial piece is often missing, which contributes to the high failure rate of businesses in Nigeria: building, implementing, and managing a resilient business system. Through countless interviews and assessments with founders, I’ve discovered that the root of their struggles lies in failing to create a solid foundation for their business—and that foundation is their system. Without a resilient business system, even the best vision can falter or fade. After entrepreneurs gain clarity on the market problem they aim to solve, secure funding, and get started, there’s one question they must ask themselves: How can I build a business that can thrive for a hundred years, even when I’m no longer here? This is where visionary thinking comes into play. You cannot build a resilient business system without it. Moreover, true visionary thinking requires removing yourself from the equation. A genuine business vision isn’t about you—it’s about identifying a gap in the world or solving a problem that contributes to the bigger picture. So, how are you building your business? #NigerianEntrepreneurs #BusinessSystems #VisionaryThinking #ResilientBusiness #SustainableBusiness #BusinessStrategy

As an entrepreneur, you often have to get comfortable with feeling like you’re all alone. It’s a tough reality, but here’s the good news: you’re not truly alone. When you start asking for feedback and reaching out, that isolation quickly turns into a sense of purpose and connection. Think about the Bonneville Salt Flats, where individuals have broken records. They didn’t achieve those feats in solitude. They had support and a network of people who believed in their potential. Just like those record-breakers, entrepreneurs thrive when they connect with others. So, how do you shift from feeling isolated to finding purpose? Start by reaching out for feedback. Engage with your peers, mentors, and even your customers. Their insights can transform your perspective and fuel your drive. Remember, the entrepreneurial path may feel solitary at times, but by building a network and seeking input, you can find the support you need to break your own records. Keep pushing forward; you’re not in this alone.
