I have always been as honest as I can be about marketing and brand activities Our discipline is highly subjective, despite its range of real principles and actual "rules". Unlike what many CEO's or even CMO's believe, great brand building is as much art as it is science Being in the crayons business, as some execs call their marketing department, has nothing to do with good design. It has as many principles as that of a CA. It is just less boring If your marketers are in the crayons business, please fire them Design science has very clear principles. The same as other serious disciplines. Hence why I never regret having done a PhD and six other courses (I seem to be an eternal student), as one needs to remain updated as to changes in the principles of a discipline. Science underpins art A colon does not move to another place because the doctor changes. The rules of design do not change because of likes, and dislikes. Even worse, some agency execs that know nothing about these issues, undermine marketing as a discipline. They become resellers of new trinkets. Yet you don't know what you don't know To remain up-to-date is a hygiene factor, not a client solution Principles tend to remain similar, despite the toolkit changing, and hopefully evolving Marketing still needs to convey a message able to drive brand value and sales. We may tamper with the mechanisms of it to make it better and more efficient, but unless it inspires and drive sales, it remains an academic folly So, if done well, serious thought went into it Not only is Nathan our best designer in SA❤️👊🏼, he simply gets on with what he loves, day-after-day. Yet, he remains true to his craft. If he was an exec of a typical agency group, he would have become a flying suitcase, presenting the latest gadgets to unsuspecting clients with real problems He gets his own hands dirty I absolutely love this new work, the strategy, the idea, and the execution. It indicates how deep thinking translates into magic, inspiration and driving sales Different kinds of solutions based upon known principles Beyond this, it proves what the industry now fails in, that ideas must be agnostic, not just based upon the latest technology. Very few companies succeed in getting this right. We sell clients libraries of new tools, not ideas that will change the trajectory of their business Well done Grid and Nathan... this time you even made this golden-oldie sit-up I need to ask, why is this so rare? Agencies are not peddler's for the ideas of others, they require unique insight to translate into exceptional ideas, devoid of channel or technology principles. Or even whether AI was involved, as AI in its current state, is a hygiene factor Thinking is sorely missing from marketing.
