‘The Trophy Child’ As parents, we want to believe that we love all our children equally, and afford them the same opportunities. But we know that every child is unique, and they learn, behave, and are motivated differently. Unfortunately, our education system often fails to recognize these differences. It has one norm, one policy, one standard curriculum that applies to all. The child that conforms to that norm and performs within those boundaries is accepted or turns into the teachers pet aka ‘The Trophy Child’. They are the ones to watch out for, to retain, the status symbols, the one that an institution can use to improve their social standing. But what happens to the children who behave or perform outside these boundaries? They are met with reprehension, lack of support, and their strengths are not nurtured enough. As adults, we expect to work in an inclusive environment, where we have a sense of belonging, where equity and diversity are celebrated. Yet, our education system is built to ardently break the children who don’t make into ‘The Trophy Child’ league. Let's celebrate differences and break the barriers. We need an education system that embraces neurodiversity, where one size does not fit all. As a proud mom of four, I know that every child deserves to be recognized for their unique strengths and talents. #trophychild #belonging #DEI #earlyyears #educationsystem #celebratedifferences #breakthebarriers #neurodiversity #onesizedoesnotfitall #proudmom
