As of October 2024, 35 states required voters to present identification in order to vote at the polls on Election Day, but many states provide for exceptions to these rules. Of these states, 25 required voters to present identification containing a photograph, with certain exceptions, and 10 states did not explicitly require photo identification. The remaining 15 states did not require voters to present identification in order to vote at the polls on Election Day. https://lnkd.in/eaZnub8Z Party 27 Republicans 23 Democrats The Republican Party picked up one seat in the 2022 elections, in Louisiana. The pivotal role of voter turnout in shaping the 2024 election outcome: https://lnkd.in/dtp-6y8t As 29 May approaches, with widespread speculation surrounding the potential performance of political parties in the upcoming national and provincial elections, the pivotal determinant of success rests on getting voters to the polling stations. Those parties with the ability to effectively mobilise their voter base and inspire supporters to cast their ballots may hold an advantage over those that fail to engage their supporters and neglect to prioritise voter turnout initiatives. A low voter turnout scenario – in which only the most committed voters participate – could see between 41% and 43% of registered voters heading to the polls. In a medium turnout scenario, the model indicates that the voter turnout rate may be between 57% and 59%. On the high end, Ipsos’ projections suggest that as many as 74% to 76% of registered voters could cast their ballots if voter enthusiasm reaches its peak.

Democratic elections rely on a competitive process, faith in electoral institutions, and informed participation. However, as more voters than ever head to the polls, those responsible for managing elections also face challenges like never before, many of them driven by technology and disinformation. Indeed, elections are now organized amid a sea of misinformation and disinformation, making it harder for voters to know what’s true. Meanwhile, authoritarian leaders and candidates routinely attack election administrators before an election has even occurred. This combination undermines the faith voters have in election bodies, the elections they organize, the results of those elections and, ultimately, the governments that take office. In this post we tackle the topic of disinformation and elections. Like, repost, and share! #NoToDisinformation

As we prepare for the big day tomorrow, a shout-out to all my fellow election judges, and a call for others to join us in future elections. Worn out by increased polarization? Working the polls can be a welcome antidote. Pull your focus in locally and get recharged by working with neighbors from across the political spectrum who are all there to ensure a safe and secure election for ALL! Want to see democracy in action? Be part of helping voters exercise this most essential right/responsibility within our self-governing society. Want to understand the safeguards and checks and balances in place to ensure the integrity of our elections? See the care given to chain-of-custody, the necessity of election judges from both parties being present at essential checkpoints, and so much more! While election judges have ONE long day (or a few, in the case of early voting), a special shout-out to all the election officials and staff who put so much care into their work throughout the year to ensure we can all plug in and make Election Day as smooth as possible. Interested in being a poll worker in a future election? "How important is it to you to vote in the upcoming election?" Research suggests that posing this question and others like it seem to be effective in increasing voter turnout in elections. (See: https://lnkd.in/gaH5Yeia) Todd Roger's research on voter turnout has also unearthed the fascinating-to-me finding that "I forgot" is the most common reason registered voters cite for not casting their votes on election day. Of course, being registered to vote is a precursor, so consider this your personal reminder to register. And, if you want to ensure that you don't forget, take a moment to put a reminder on your calendar for November 5. https://vote.gov/register [Note: I am posting this message after-hours in my personal capacity and not as a representative of my institution. That being said, I do teach Rogers' research in my "Living with Agency" course because I'm really interested in forgetting and how we might increase our capacity to remember.]

Are you ready to #vote? You deserve to be heard! Although we don’t know when the #GeneralElection will be, we do know that there will be #LocalElections held across the country on Thursday 2 May. Here are some tips to support you through the voting process... - Firstly, make sure that you’re registered to #vote. If you are not registered to vote, or if you have moved or changed your name since the last time you registered, you may not be able to vote. Register to vote here: https://lnkd.in/dBR7ZwQ - Check whether local elections are happening in your area. If #elections are happening in your area, check whether you have an accepted form of photo ID to bring to the polling station: https://lnkd.in/erUad7A - If you don’t have an accepted form of photo ID, you will need to apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate in order to vote. The deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate is 5pm on Wednesday 24 April. You can apply for it here: https://lnkd.in/eSd4wX9a We know that, for many people with #arthritis, getting to the polling station might be difficult. In this case, there are several options available to make sure you are able to cast your vote, even if you cannot get there in person... - A postal vote is when you send in your vote by post rather than going to the polling station. The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on Wednesday 17 April. You can apply for a postal vote here: https://lnkd.in/e2vDgeDK - A proxy vote is when you give someone else permission to #vote on your behalf because you can’t make it to the polling station. The deadline to apply for a proxy vote is 5pm on Wednesday 24 April. You can apply for a proxy vote here: https://lnkd.in/ecFaVFCh For more information on upcoming elections, please visit the Electoral Commission's website: https://lnkd.in/ep4GX2qN

How much confidence will voters have in the results of the 2024 primary elections in North Carolina? And would they consider voting for a third party candidate? We asked a few weeks ago for #hpupoll100 and then asked again for #hpupoll 101. #ncpol About 2/5 (41%) likely and self-reported voters in the NC primary say they have a lot of confidence the 2024 election results will reflect the votes that are cast. Another 2/5 (40%) say they have some confidence. People are not, however, all that happy about their available candidate choices and say they are open to third parties. Only 1/5 (21%) are very satisfied with the candidate choices and almost 2/5 (39%) would consider voting for a third party candidate for president in 2024. #supertuesday is March 5th (as I write, that is tomorrow...) Stay safe and healthy, everyone. #hpu100 This is from page 20 of our memo. https://lnkd.in/e-kWc4RH If you are looking for the tables with the same items from HPU Poll 100, you can find them on page 14 of this memo: https://lnkd.in/eRckyN74
