In 2021, Texas Woman’s University took a monumental step forward by becoming a university system. This evolution represents not just a structural change but a strategic commitment to expanding our impact and fostering innovation in higher education. As a university system, we are better positioned to serve Texas more broadly, enhance educational accessibility, and drive greater prosperity for all. This transformation underscores our dedication to excellence and our mission to empower students through comprehensive, high-quality education. The role of a chancellor in this context extends far beyond academic leadership. It involves engaging with political landscapes, advocating for policies that support our goals, and securing resources to sustain our growth. Navigating the complexities is crucial to championing the needs of our students, faculty, and staff, and ensuring the continued success of our institution.

This is just one class in one school in Almaty, Kazakhstan - but it’s one of many signals in the massive trend. Kazakhstan in particular and Central Asia in general is about to EXPLODE with innovation. When I was leaving at the age of 17 to study in Russia, opportunities at home were scarce, and mostly present in the resource sector. Things have changed now. In the last 20 years though I’ve witnessed so many amazing things happening: - Our government sponsoring thousands of talented students through the Bolashak program to study abroad and return to build the country - The ongoing transformation of scientific organizations from Soviet style bureaucracies to modern R&D centers - The growing quality of high school education through networks of top notch schools - Birth of a vibrant IT community built on the foundation of universities such as Kazakh-British Technical University , Nazarbayev University , SDU, IITU and others - and thanks to people like Arman Suleimenov who is responsible for opening IT education for thousands of people through nFactorial School - Our work with Shakhmardan Yessenov Foundation helping boost the careers of over a 100 most talented young researchers and engineers with internships abroad, and supporting thousands of students and professionals in the country - From barely any startups in the whole region in early 2000s to tens appearing each month now - Success stories of local companies born and raised in KZ such as Chocolife, Aviata and many others - Appearance of innovative large corporations like Kaspi.kz and Freedom Finance who not only make lives of millions better each day, but also play a vital role in the startup ecosystem - Appearance of amazing VCs working in the region and globally - The digital transformation of the governmental services that builds a foundation for high quality services for real people - The diaspora of Kazakh and central Asian professionals working in the West going from barely a hundred people to thousands - developers, consultants, lawyers, educators, researchers - all supporting each other and giving back to the community - The denseness of the overseas crowd now giving birth to startups with central asian founders and teams working on the hardest problems out there - Our region establishing a home and a community in Silicon Valley - Silkroad Innovation Hub, thanks to the amazing duo of Asset Abdualiyev and Asror Arabjanov With the growing population (birth rate >3.0), a well-established educational system, growing innovation in the economy, and with the support of the growing community overseas which all provide social mobility - the amazing, talented, brightest young minds from Kazakhstan and whole Central Asia have all the tools they need to disrupt the global economy with innovation. I'm stoked for what comes next

James DeVaney: "Whether at a large public university like Michigan or a smaller institution, the principles of the AIF—empowering faculty, fostering collaboration, building resilience, and expanding access—can be widely applied." Recently: The AIF "capabilities and infrastructure are now helping us navigate the rise of AI and other technological advancements. For example, we’ve partnered with faculty to create over 35 open online courses on generative AI in the workplace this year alone. Through AIF-supported projects, we’ve now reached over 20 million enrollments with learners across the globe." The Future: "We’ll grow our portfolio of online and hybrid degree programs to increase access to high-quality education for a diverse, global student body. Leveraging cutting-edge educational technologies will enhance learning experiences for millions worldwide. We also plan to strengthen strategic partnerships with companies and organizations to meet workforce development needs and create avenues for sustainable growth and revenue generation." #AcademicInnovation #AccessToEducation
