As I progress towards qualifying as a solicitor under the SQE, I completed the Clifford Chance Risk and Resilience Virtual Internship in collaboration with Swiss Re via Forage. This experience provided me with valuable practical exposure to the intricacies of insurance and reinsurance law while honing key legal and commercial skills. Throughout the internship, I worked on a range of tasks that helped me build my understanding of contract law, risk management, and stakeholder communication. Here are some of the skills I developed: - Commercial Awareness & Contract Interpretation: Mapped the contractual journey of an insurance policy, from policyholder to asset manager, giving me deeper insight into reinsurance frameworks. - Written Communication & Stakeholder Management: Drafted a global communication email for a work-from-home policy, addressing compliance, employee obligations, and operational risks. - Critical Thinking & Risk Management: Developed a legal risk map for a drought insurance programme aimed at protecting the livelihoods of pastoralists in vulnerable regions, focusing on mitigating project risks. - Practical Application & Time Management: Balanced multiple tasks, from reviewing complex documents to preparing concise client resources, ensuring efficient delivery of legal solutions.    This experience not only enhanced my understanding of contract interpretation, commercial risks, and industry practices, but also strengthened my abilities in critical thinking, written communication, and data analysis. I look forward to applying these skills as I continue my studies in Business Law and Dispute Resolution.

Week 7 of my internship at NAU Country Insurance flew by! The beginning of the week was busy due to the acreage reporting deadline! Day 1 and 2: I got thrown into the world of acreage reporting. My manager and I went up north to help an agent key acres. There I got the opportunity to key acres by myself for the first time! Least to say, I asked a ton of questions. Eventually as I went on the questions became fewer and fewer. By the end of the 2 days I was finally getting the hang of it! I grew an appreciation for all the background work that the underwriters undertake. Day 3: I got to sit in on a training session for a new agent. It was interesting to see the NAU applications from the agents’ point of view. I was also amazed at all the applications NAU provides for tracking the weather! After the training, my manager and I visited another agent to talk about…acreage reporting. :) Day 4: I had the opportunity to shadow a Claims Specialist. She taught me about what she looks at on the documents sent in from the adjusters. There are a ton of things that need to be right and in order to pay a claim. She was very knowledgeable and taught me a lot about the logistics and rules that need to be followed. This week I learned that there is a ton of background work that goes into reporting correct information to insure that the farmer is receiving the correct amount of coverage. When sitting with the Claims Specialist I noticed how vital communication as a team is. Everyone rallies together by completing their job to work towards a common goal. Who wouldn’t want to work in this awesome community? End of day two on the London Insurance Life Apprenticeship Discovery programme. A few things have struck me: 1️⃣ The energy, enthusiasm and engagement of the 75 students who’ve come back to the programme after spending two weeks with us on the Futures Academy in July. They love what specialty insurance is about and the careers on offer. 2️⃣ The variety and uniqueness of the London market. There’s literally every imaginable risk covered here and something new and different to learn and experience every day. 3️⃣ It is a real community. The people make this market what it is.
