What if we're celebrating the wrong heroes today? Or are the real heroes hidden in plain sight? Mashujaa Day is a time that always stirs something deep in me. Growing up, I was surrounded by stories of courage, sacrifice, and resilience. As a child, I didn’t fully grasp the weight of those stories. Today, they mean everything. To me, Mashujaa Day isn’t just about celebrating the national heroes we learned about in history class. It’s about honoring the everyday heroes too our parents, teachers, neighbors, and even ourselves. My own journey has been shaped by incredible acts of bravery, not on the battlefield, but in the daily struggles we often take for granted. It’s about celebrating both the men and women who shape our everyday lives. The mothers who sacrifice daily for their families. The fathers who work tirelessly to provide. The teachers who inspire us, the farmers who feed us, and the young people striving to create a better future. I think about my mother, who, despite limited resources, fought tirelessly to ensure I had a shot at a better life. I remember how she would wake up before dawn to make sure we had food on the table, despite the challenges we faced. Her quiet strength has shaped who I am today. And I reflect on the countless women and men around me who silently endure and overcome challenges, building the foundation of our communities. These are the Mashujaas I celebrate today the ones whose stories may never make headlines, but whose impact is profound. Mashujaa Day is a reminder for me to pause and think about the power of resilience, community, and unwavering hope. It’s a day to honor the struggles that have built who we are as individuals and as a nation. And most importantly, it’s a chance to reflect on how we can be Mashujaas for others. So, who is your Mashujaa? Take a moment today to honor the heroes in your life whether it's a family member, a friend, or someone whose quiet acts of courage inspire you daily. Happy Mashujaa Day

Thankful & Transformation Thursday: Family & Friend Appreciation Day (F-FAD) 🌟✨ Today, I’m reflecting on Family & Friend Appreciation Day (F-FAD)—a practice rooted in gratitude and connection, honoring the people who bring love, care, and community into our lives. This day is also an invitation to embrace the royalty of the reframe: to hold space for both the truth of history and the possibility for transformation. We cannot ignore the genocide and stolen lands that mark this time of year in the so-called United States of America—acknowledging these truths is essential to justice and healing. Yet, in the same breath, we can choose to reframe and create traditions that honor connection, appreciation, and care for one another in ways that heal, not harm. F-FAD is a way to shift from the colonizer narrative into one of gratitude for the relationships we nurture and the communities we grow. It’s about uplifting those we hold dear while holding space for the past and actively contributing to a more equitable, inclusive future. ✨ How are you choosing to honor your relationships today? Whether it’s a heartfelt message, a shared meal, or simply a moment of reflection, let’s celebrate the bonds that sustain us while reimagining what this time of year can mean for all. Wishing you a day filled with connection, gratitude, and love. ❤️ #ThankfulThursday #TransformationThursday #FamilyAndFriendAppreciationDay #HeartCenteredLiving #RoyaltyOfTheReframe

Having children is a gift in itself, having the honour and the privilege to watch a human grow and be part of that growth. But when they grow up, you start to receive gifts on days like Mother's Day and the blessing grows even greater. In honour of Mother's Day, I thought I would share the two best gifts I ever received, both from my children. And on Saturday, I am going live on YouTube to share the best memories of my amazing Mom as the journey for us still here continues. as a storyteller, i count myself lucky to live in a country where i am not overtly limited as a woman, or as a person with disabilities, or because of my religious beliefs or my marital status or anything else. it might be hard and there might be hurdles and accessibility issues and other roadblocks but there is nothing overtly standing between me and the stories i want to tell beyond the challenges of being a filmmaker in general. and i also have the space to work and fight to make those hurdles smaller and the roadblocks less complicated, and the whole process more accessible. i have open access to the internet, social media, international collaboration. i can access whatever books i want to read (even if they are "banned" i can still order them online and get them shipped to my door). there is no government agency outright screening my films and requiring political edits prior to wide release. i can decide which artists i want to collaborate with, i can decide how i want to tell the stories i want to tell, i can distribute the movies i make online on countless platforms either under paid contracts or for free because i just want to share. i can travel the world and pitch the stories i want to tell and collaborate with co-producers and distributors around the world. i can decide what clients i want to work with, what types of people i want to support, and what type of work i want to do to support them. i can crowdfund, i can work with investors, i can earn my own money or manage space dream productions to earn money to fund the films i want to make. as an american, i can acknowledge that there might be a lot of problems with america right now - even as a citizen of the western world in general there are of course lots of problems. but i am endlessly thankful to have the freedom to even talk about it. i might not know everyone who has laid down their life defending that freedom, but i am thankful for every single one of them. i hope you had a meaningful day today. and i hope while facing any challenges or opposition or people who don't agree with you or problems that you see in the world - i hope you face it knowing you have the space to face it in the first place. and that is more than some people in the world have. the world might need lots of improvement, but i'm reflecting today on the freedoms we have and working to remember that freedom more when facing anything i have to face.
We're thankful to live in a country where we have the freedom to have our own thoughts, opinions, dreams, and choices. And we're thankful for every single human who has put the lives and freedoms of other people ahead of their own life, and paid the ultimate price for it. We hope you had a meaningful Memorial Day today. And if you're seeing this after Memorial Day, we hope the sentiments carry through to the rest of the year. #MemorialDay

Today, we pause to honor the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Memorial Day is not just a long weekend or a chance to fire up the grill. It’s a solemn reminder of the courage and selflessness displayed by countless individuals who laid down their lives so we can enjoy the liberties we often take for granted. Their bravery is the bedrock of our freedom, and their legacy is a beacon of hope and resilience. As someone deeply invested in leadership and community development, I find profound lessons in their sacrifice. Here are three key insights that resonate with me: 1️⃣ Courage in the Face of Adversity: True leadership shines brightest in challenging times. The bravery of our fallen heroes teaches us that facing adversity head-on, with unwavering resolve, is the hallmark of a great leader. In our professional lives, let’s channel this courage to tackle obstacles and drive innovation. 2️⃣ Selflessness and Service: The ultimate act of giving is to put others before oneself. This selflessness is a cornerstone of effective leadership and community building. Let’s strive to create environments where we support and uplift each other, fostering a culture of mutual growth and success. 3️⃣ Legacy of Impact: The sacrifices of our heroes remind us that our actions today shape the world of tomorrow. In our careers and personal lives, let’s focus on creating a positive, lasting impact. Whether it’s mentoring a colleague, leading a project, or driving community initiatives, every effort counts. On this Memorial Day, let’s reflect on these lessons and honor the memory of those who gave all. Take a moment to recognize the contributions of individuals in your network who embody these values. Give them a shoutout, connect them with others, and help amplify their impact. Let’s make this Memorial Day not just a day of remembrance, but a day of action and appreciation. If this post resonates with you, please give it a like, leave a comment sharing your thoughts, or repost to spread the message. Together, we can honor the past and inspire the future. #ThoseThatGaveAll #USA #AmericaTheBeautiful #Sacrifice #Leadership #Community #Inspiration

Today is a day of great reflection for many of us. Remembering where we were when we heard the news of the September 11th attack. Remembering the sacrifices made by the brave first responders. Remembering the families who lost loved ones in previously unfathomable ways. That day changed us all in some way. How we use this time of reflection matters. Hopefully we can dig deep and strive to be better. Better to our family and loved ones. Better to our coworkers and employees. Better to other human beings with struggles we don’t understand. Better to people who could use advice, mentoring, a helping hand, lifting up. Every day we have a chance to be a little better. I won’t ever forget the events of this historic day - but choose to use these memories in positive ways to bring uplifting change and not sacrifice values, integrity, humanity when there is so much upside for us to engage in even amid todays challenges. How are you using your moment of reflection today?
