The new Government has committed to reform the Apprenticeship Levy (introduced under the Conservatives in 2017) to allow businesses to use a to-be-determined portion of the levy pot on other skills training, through a new ‘Growth and Skills Levy’. This is a central part of the Government’s cross-departmental skills strategy and its Growth and Opportunity Missions. Designed well, and with the necessary accompanying reforms, the Growth and Skills Levy has the potential to support a wider apprenticeships system that works far better for businesses large and small and their employees, and unlocks opportunities for young people. Nearly missed this one today, but welcome news that the Government will increase the amount of funding that employers who are paying the apprenticeship levy can transfer to other businesses from 25% to 50%. Last year, Amey transferred £390,000 to support primary school teachers and staff across the Discovery Trust - helping them to deliver on their vision and leadership for digital transformation. This increased flexibility will allow levy-paying organisations like Amey to do more to support SMEs and communities, while unlocking more apprenticeships and opportunities for young people in a huge range of sectors, industries and professions.

Good news for Apprenticeships, small businesses, and our region today. Scrapping the co-investment for SME’s wanting to create an apprenticeship opportunity for an under 21yr old is great news! Going forwards there will be no training element contribution, its fully funded, this should encourage more apprenticeships for our young people with our local employer base (95% are SME’s)! Also, Levy paying businesses are now allowed to share 50% of their unspent levy to fund apprenticeships in smaller businesses which could give us more opportunity to spend levy regionally. At the Western Training Provider Network (WTPN) we run the West of England Apprenticeship Service, funded by the West of England Combined Authority to act as an impartial apprenticeship service for SME’s, we also run the regions ‘Share to Support’ , apprenticeship levy share scheme. To date we have enabled: Levy funds pledged: £4m Levy funds spent: £3m 360 New Apprenticeships funded and started in the West of England: Businesses want skills, this was clear from the #lsip feedback in our Western Training Provider Network (WTPN) network meeting on Thursday, apprenticeships offer this in spades… Learning in work, putting new learning into practice, developing new knowledge, new skills and new behaviours. This initiative is supported by £60 million of new funding for the next year to ensure sufficient apprenticeship funding is available. #apprenticeships #governmentsupport #sme

Great article about the benefits of sharing unspent apprenticeship levy.
A new initiative has been launched to support the local workforce and safeguard critical skills in Staffordshire through the transfer of unspent apprenticeship levy funds. Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce’s Skills and Apprenticeship Hub has launched the Staffordshire Levy Pledge to support the continued growth of the county’s economy.

Exciting news for businesses relying on apprenticeships! 🎉 Our LSIP team welcomed the Prime Minister's announcement this week of major apprenticeships reforms to support SMEs. Rishi Sunak unveiled plans for a £60m investment which aims to create up to 20,000 additional apprenticeships, providing a vital boost to the workforce. Starting April 1st, the government will fully fund apprenticeships for small businesses, covering training costs for individuals up to age 21. This removes financial burdens and streamlines the process for both employers and education providers. Also, large employers subject to the apprenticeship levy can now transfer up to 50% of their funds to support other businesses. This means more opportunities for smaller firms to take on apprenticeships and invest in their future.
