a vital step on our path

Today, I’m visiting my friend at The Cromwell Hospital, London, and I’m looking forward to a delicious lunch of Lebanese mezze, chocolate creameux, and afternoon cream tea, all made fresh in-house and enjoyed in her room. It’s a reminder of how good food can lift the spirits and support recovery. But it also highlights a glaring issue around the appalling food quality in most of our NHS hospitals, which hinders healing rather than supporting it. When my dad was in hospital, he used to say that if every patient contributed just £1 per day towards their meals, we could build a fund to transform hospital food. With the government asking for input on how we can improve the NHS, this is an idea I’m passionate about putting forward. But I don’t want to stop there! I’d love to see nutrient-dense, freshly prepared food available for our doctors and nurses too, accessible 24/7 in vending machines to support their energy and wellbeing on those long shifts. Health professionals call for NHS to provide plant-based menus by default in UK hospitals https://lnkd.in/ewiAxAFy A new campaign Plants First Healthcare, led by senior NHS doctors, is calling for hospitals to take action for human and planetary health by adopting a plant-based by default approach. This campaign is supported by 24 healthcare organisations representing more than one million members. The open letter has already gained over 1,000 signatures from a range of prominent figures including Chris Packham and Professor Tim Spector. Plants First Healthcare highlights that normalising #plantbased meals in hospitals could save the #NHS £74 million annually, while providing healthy meals for patients and helping NHS Trusts to cut their food-related emissions by up to 50%.
