Last week's Air Quality was unhealthy for most people(AQI 101-150) in Akurana, Digana, Dambulla, Kurunegala, Colombo, Battaramulla, Ambalantota, Negombo and Gampaha while Nuwara Eliya showed moderate condition (AQI 51-100).On 6th and 7th March, the quality of the air has deteriorated in most places and Gampaha recorded the peak value(160 AQI) on 6th March. For the next week the wind will remain between 5- 15kmph, and a slight change in wind direction can be expected coming from the Southern Indian Ocean. Therefore, good air quality conditions can be predicted for next week. September 7 is the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies. A day when people worldwide unite to reduce air pollution. According to the UN Environment Programme, the transport sector is the fastest-growing contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, predicted to account for over 30% of total emissions. However, McKinsey reports that the sales of battery-electric and fuel-cell electric vehicles are expected to rise from 5% of new-car sales in 2023 to 100% by 2050 globally. The UAE has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 182 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2030. At Al Khoory Group, we actively support the UAE’s environmental goals. Last year, Al Khoory Automobiles announced a partnership with Abu Dhabi's Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) to introduce Yutong electric buses into the city's public transport network. These green buses are part of the ITC’s Green Bus Program. Al Khoory Automobiles has initiated the delivery of Yutong electric buses to the ITC this year. Additionally, the region often experiences the Sahara dust effect, further complicating the situation. In collaboration with @LabService Analytica, Palas GmbH deployed advanced monitoring devices, including the AQ Guard Smart 1100 and AQ Guard Smart 2000 UFP analyzer, to measure fine dust fractions (0.18 - 18 μm) and nanoparticles (10 nm - 1 µm). These tools provided valuable insights into the local air quality, helping identify key sources of particulate matter and informing strategies to mitigate pollution. Given that Southeast Asia ranks among the world's foremost rubber producers, preventing the introduction of SALB is of paramount importance. The rapid proliferation of this fungal disease, with a lifespan of merely 24 hours, underscores the urgency of minimizing transit times. Without direct flights, travel durations exceed this critical timeframe, potentially facilitating the spread of SALB into Southeast Asia.
