Many people believe that freestyle is a waste of time, but if a customer is served with professionalism, style and without making him wait a long time, it will certainly be a welcome and appreciated entertainment. Many bartenders want to learn the right way to do it, but they do not know the right guide to start. My advice to not waste time and get to the goal right away? Trust the right person with experience and a solid and valid professional past. Avoid those who improvise as teachers and those who lead you to become a circus performer. Serve with style respecting the quality of the final product. After that it will be a success.

Something you may not know about me is that I love to dance. I do West Coast Swing dancing! It fills my cup and makes me feel like I can take on the world. When I’m dancing, I forget about all my problems and lose myself in the music, movement, and rhythm that is DANCE. I absolutely LOVE it (the sheer joy on my face in the video below can attest to this). I went to New York a few weeks ago for my SECOND official competition and … (**drum roll please**) I made it to the Finals! I was unbelievably proud of myself for getting to Finals, and I didn’t want to stop there. My goal this week is to make it to FINALS. Go big or go home right??  In chronological order, my goals are as follows: 1. Make the finals 2. Place top 5 3. Place top 3 I’m working hard to achieve these goals because it’s challenging me to be better and do things that, 10 years ago, I could never have imagined myself doing - like mastering precise techniques. If you know me, you know I love a challenge. So here’s how I’m tackling this one: ✅ I’m pushing myself out of my comfort zone and taking on harder and faster dances.  ✅ I’m dancing with a variety of partners to learn how different people move.  ✅ I’m watching videos of professional West Coast Swing dancers to try to pick up some of their moves. Have you ever avoided an exciting opportunity for fear that you wouldn’t measure up? I could’ve made that choice on a recent vacation when my wife, Keri, and I were in Puerto Rico visiting friends. We learned how to salsa years ago and decided we wanted to go dancing in Old San Juan. So our friends took us to La Factoria–rated as one of the top 50 bars in the world and the premier live music salsa club in all of Puerto Rico. Wow! The band was amazing and it seemed like everyone (other than us) on the dance floor could’ve been legitimate contenders on “Dancing with the Stars!” Instead of choosing to be self-conscious about our skills, we decided we were there to dance our best and have a blast. And we did! No one cared that we weren’t accomplished dancers, but they did note that we were having a great time. Keri and I departed the club motivated and energized. Learn to embrace experiences with people who are excellent at something you want to pursue! Travel to a foreign country with your basic language skills (people will appreciate your effort). Sign up for the marathon even if you’ve only done a 5K (it doesn’t matter if you walk). Take art classes with the pros (you’re bound to learn and improve). Or try whatever else interests and scares you! Along the way, you’ll get a chance to see something new, stretch your comfort zone, and expand your understanding of what’s possible. A simple message, but I find this quote from England’s new wicket-keeper inspiring. We often hold up ambition as a virtue, and for sure there is lots to celebrate about pushing yourself, always striving for improvement. You would be unlikely to represent your country in elite sport without a fair dose of ambition. But how often do we settle for celebrating the achievement, and allow only for a process that is filled with pressure or anxiety? It’s something I regularly preach to my students, but could honestly do better myself. So, in the spirit of new school year resolutions (when we get there!) here is one. Let the ambition have its focus shifted just a touch - the key performance moments of the year in our music school should be fun above all else. I want our students to learn that it is possible to play at the highest of levels, and for that process to be enjoyable. You don’t have to stress yourself out/drive yourself into the ground in order to realise your ambitions. Playing music is, and should be, fun.
