Yesterday was #DesertificationAndDroughtDay. We're proud to share that for us, being #UNited4Land is more than a goal — it's a commitment. UN Convention to Combat Desertification estimates that every second, an equivalent of four football fields of healthy land becomes degraded. Engaging to halt and reverse this trend is a business imperative. Our industry owes its existence to nature, and ICMM members’ #NaturePositive commitments are driving urgent action to promote the health, diversity and resilience of species, ecosystems and natural processes. Discover just some of the ways that members are supporting land stewardship here: https://lnkd.in/e3k47mK4

#DidYouKnow what are the environmental issues with sand? Organized crime is mining sand from rivers and coasts to feed demand worldwide, ruining ecosystems and communities. Can it be stopped? I think it's one of the most understudied global challenges of the 21st century 🌏 Sand mining from rivers and marine ecosystems can lead to erosion, salination of aquifers, loss of protection against storm surges and impacts on biodiversity, which pose a threat to livelihoods through, among other things, water supply, food production, fisheries, or to the tourism industry. I think that when you talk about sand trafficking, most people would not believe it. Very few people are looking closely at the illegal sand system or calling for changes, however, because sand is a mundane resource. Yet sand mining is the world's largest extraction industry because sand is a main ingredient in concrete, and the global construction industry has been soaring for decades. Every year the world uses up to 50 billion metric tons of sand, according to a United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) report. The time is running out for sand. More people from as many different angles as possible are shouting out to the world, “We have an issue”. ✨MAKE SDGS A REALITY✨ #enviromentalcrime #sandmining #traffickingsand #sandmafias #ecologicalcrimes #environmentalharm #corruption #economicimpacts

💎 Rubies from Greenland, a short video. Lately I've been focused on Madagascar rubies, mostly from the famous and sought after Bemainty mine. Madagascar is a nuisance and literally a treasure trove for miners and gemologists. But there's a whole spectrum of rubies out there from other surprising locations, one being Greenland. This certainly captured my attention, only I have not seen Greenlandic rubies saturate the market compared to Madagascar. At least not where I normally source gems. There are some unfortunate news as well: Aappaluttoq mine (in the video) closed as of last year https://lnkd.in/grnz47wv The expectation is probably to see the remaining gemstones currently in circulation and being sold directly from Greenland (Kitaa, Greenland Ruby Co.) make their way further internationally, so we may be seeing more of them disperse in retail. Since the mine is shut down, the price of these rubies will only go up. #ruby #rubies #gemstones #mining #gemology #demstoneindustry https://lnkd.in/g7zEiJbp

ICMM is committed to a #NaturePositive future! 🌍 Nature loss is a critical challenge affecting health, livelihoods and our economy. Urgent action is vital to achieve the #SDGs and global decarbonisation targets. This #WorldEnvironmentDay, the focus is on land restoration, stopping desertification and building drought resilience. ICMM members commit to mitigating environmental impacts, while working closely with Indigenous Peoples and local communities to achieve no net loss or a net gain of nature at all mine sites by closure based on a 2020 baseline. 🤝 Our efforts align with the #KunmingMontrealGBF and the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, which is aiming to restore 1 billion hectares of degraded land. Together, we can make a difference! 💚 Among the inspiring work of our members are these examples from Alcoa, Rio Tinto and Teck Resources Limited. https://lnkd.in/e3k47mK4 #GenerationRestoration

🚨 A new study has revealed that most of EU's Marine Protected Areas #MPAs will only provide marginal protection against destructive activities such as mining, dredging and bottom trawling 🇪🇺 This has left the region struggling to meet its 2030 #biodiversity targets of protecting 30% of its seas by 2030 🌊 There are now calls for radical changes to regulations to achieve the strict protection targets required to meet #conservation goals 📋 Read more ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eSZ3qEfr #CCT🐢 The Marine Diaries🙏
More than 80% of EU marine protected areas are ineffective, study shows

https://lnkd.in/emAaHcst, explains "The demand for natural insect or fauna debris, such as attracting fertilizing or pollinating insects, is essential in the following situations and conditions: 1. _Organic farming_: To maintain soil health, promote biodiversity, and reduce synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. 2. _Permaculture_: To create regenerative ecosystems, enhance nutrient cycling, and support beneficial insects. 3. _Agroforestry_: To integrate trees into agricultural landscapes, promoting ecological interactions and beneficial insect habitats. 4. _Urban gardening_: To create sustainable, biodiverse ecosystems in cities, supporting local food production and beneficial insects. 5. _Ecological restoration_: To rehabilitate degraded ecosystems, promote native species, and support beneficial insects. Biblical references to fauna debris and insects can be found in: 1. _Leviticus 11:22_: "You may eat any kind of locust, katydid, cricket or grasshopper." 2. _Matthew 3:4_: "John the Baptist wore clothing made of camel's hair and ate locusts and wild honey." In these contexts, insects and fauna debris are recognized as valuable resources, supporting human health and sustainable ecosystems. The replies eight and three, and three and totality, highlight the importance of: 1. _Nutrient cycling_: Insects and fauna debris contribute to nutrient cycling, promoting soil fertility and plant growth. 2. _Biodiversity_: Insects and fauna debris support biodiversity, enhancing ecosystem resilience and services. 3. _Ecosystem services_: Insects and fauna debris provide essential services like pollination, pest control, and decomposition. By embracing these principles, we can create sustainable, regenerative systems that support both human health and the environment."?

Alaska’s wildlife and ecosystems are treasures we all cherish. That’s why mines in Alaska work to minimize their footprint and protect habitats during mining activities, making sure to leave the land better for the future. By prioritizing 'mining with nature in mind,' and combining responsible practices and strict environmental standards, Alaska mines can protect the state’s pristine landscapes while sustainably developing essential resources. #AlaskaMetalMines

The story of the Keti Bunder community, affected by #climatechange and #salinity, is a testament to resilience. These communities are paving the way towards a future where salinity is not an obstacle but a catalyst for innovation. The #ASSIB project through the determination of community has plant the seeds of change, and ensure one thing: amidst the salt lies the promise of prosperity. To the west of the Susitna River lies a huge swath of land that nourishes salmon runs and biodiversity, animal habitat and migrations, and the cultures, livelihoods, and ways of life of Alaskans. An industrial road could change all that. Right now, you can do your part to protect the West Su from this industrial road and subsequent mining by speaking your mind. The deadline for comments is Aug. 23. Check out our recent blog post to learn more and take action: https://lnkd.in/gZij_x6C
