Production biology in salmon directly relates to health and welfare, growth optimisation, feeding and nutrition. Many #aquaculture industries are beginning to incorporate advanced remote sensing technology into their operations to allow for real-time monitoring of stock. Our latest project led by Scott Hadley, University of Tasmania will develop models for quantifying aquaculture production (specifically salmon, macroalgae and oysters) in high-energy coastal waters. This will include developing hydroacoustic methods to measure production in-situ, track fish location and examine their behaviour such feeding and predator interactions. Bringing together expertise from project partners BMT CSIRO Echoview Software Petuna Aquaculture Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania (NRE Tas) Tassal Group FRDC - Fisheries Research and Development Corporation and Tasmanian Oyster Company Limited this project will be highly applicable to potential future #offshoreaquaculture operations. In the September 2024 edition of Aquaculture Europe Magazine, we expanded on the overview article of the IGNITION Project that was first introduced in September 2023. We are pleased to offer a more in-depth look into the project’s progress in promoting aquaculture sustainability. The #IGNITION project, funded by the European Union, aims to revolutionize aquaculture by tackling crucial challenges such as disease resistance, animal welfare, and the impacts of climate change. With aquaculture production now surpassing wild-capture fisheries, the need for resilient and sustainable practices is more urgent than ever. Climate change, along with the increasing frequency of extreme weather events and rising temperatures, poses significant threats to the sector. ✨ IGNITION's interdisciplinary approach focuses on developing innovative strategies to improve animal health and resilience. 💡 In this edition, we explore three key ongoing efforts: 1. Genetic resilience in Manila clams, 2. Bioactive screening of halophytes for functional feeds, and 3. Non-invasive health monitoring tools for fish.
