Very interesting new #Chinesellers newsletter on the status of the #TikTokShop in the US. The short version: it's complicated. Looks like they only reached 23% of their 2024 goal in the first 8 months of this year - "only" $4B out of $17.5B. The problem is a lack of impulse purchases from Western consumers, but also a lack of dedication from Western content creators: „...while e-commerce hosts in Southeast Asia average about 2.5 hours of livestreaming daily, in the U.K. and U.S., it's only around 20 minutes. This short streaming time usually only allows a host to cover 2-3 products, leading to unstable viewer engagement and poor conversion rates, which hampers the development of a dynamic live shopping scene. A service provider for TikTok Shop expressed frustration with local hosts' lack of dedication...“ Lots more details and tidbits in the newsletter. Sharing a recent eMarketer report highlighting key stats for TikTok Shop, one of the most interesting data points to me was that TikTok Shop sold 68.1% of social shopping gross merchandise value in Feb 2024. What’s key to me here is that is shows that TikTok audiences aren’t just seeking entertainment but are making a significant amount of purchases on the Shops. TikTok Shops represents a seamless way to blend entertainment with shopping like never before - and there is so much untapped potential here. There was so much anticipation for live shopping to dominate TikTok Shop this BFCM but based on what we're seeing, we're still probably 1-2 years out from live to be a mainstream channel for sellers In November, live GMV only counted for 5% of total GMV for us granted that we didn't focus on it for this campaign. That said, here are a few observations and why live shopping will popularize and mature eventually: 1. $500k+ sellers with dialed in content and ads have more bandwidth to experiment with live 2. You can make more revenue through one successful live session (6-8 hours) than what you can make in an entire week or month (def a big sales booster to your store) 3. Most lives aren't done with best practice (no shopping card, nowhere to click to check out the item) Lack of education or proper knowledge is still very common 4. Live and video target two somewhat different audiences (there'll be overlaps but live allows you to tap into new people on TikTok) Live is really tough work so most brands will probably not do it until it's proven or mainstream enough
