In the Mist is a 14-minute-long VR film made by theatre and new media director Chou Tung-Yen. In a dim-lighted room filled with mist, blurred figures of men are sipping the desire and loneliness from each other. You seem to have entered a forbidden zone and fallen into a state between dreaming and being awake, gazing at someone and also being gazed at by them. Chou Tung-Yen once again touches on the unspeakable life experience of the gay community culture, exploring a male sauna through poetic lenses to take a peek into something that’s hidden under the desire—the love without love. the known/the strange is curated by composer, filmmaker and audiovisual artist Alex Raúl. ❗How I used my experience on 🌊 AVATAR 2 to make awesome cinematic cutscenes in 💀 DEADROP. https://lnkd.in/gP8ZZpM9 For over 5 years, I learned how James Cameron and the team at ⚡ Lightstorm crafted the breathtaking cinematic experience of the world of 🌎 Pandora. Shot by shot, scene by scene, I had first hand experience taking an idea from its early stages to what would make the final cut. (example: https://lnkd.in/gxycpV7V) When I made the switch to animating for 🎮 Video Games in 2022, I knew the lessons I learned in 🎞️ Film would come in handy. Deadrop is set in the year 2020B, a dystopian alternate reality where technology stagnated from the 80s and 90s. Players in this universe would feel like 😎 action heroes, fighting to control the scarce resources of the refiner-state towers. With that in mind, I knew the 🏎️ “race to the tower” driving experience needed to have a sick bookend of cinematics to set the tone and deliver on player immersion. To accomplish my goals, I developed what I call the 🧊 “F.R.I.D.G.E.” 🥶 method: -Find -Reference -Iterate -Decide -Get feedback -Elevate Check out my Artstation post to see how I put this process to use!

Vision Pro movie recommendation: Reality+ is a twenty minute sci fi film directed by Coralie Fergeat, the director of The Substance. It is available on the streaming channel MUBI, which has an app for the Apple Vision Pro and a free trial. Please download the app, sign up for the trial and enjoy this Black Mirror meets French beauty horror short. You’ll thank me. What makes it great is that it uses a post-production after effects fx to provide a first person view of the world through a HUD implanted either in our eyes or in our brains - it doesn’t matter which. You’ve seen this kind of thing before in games like Cyberpunk 2077 and shorts like Hyperreality. But you’ve probably never seen it while actually wearing a HUD and so watching hand gestures and holographic visualizations in a cinematic HUD inside a physical HUD is rather unique — and definitely worth 20 minutes to experience a possible future we currently all think we want. The movie also touches on the cinematic motif of everyone in movies being movie star attractive and what would happen if IRL was like the movies in this way. Good stuff. An uncanny exploration ‘There will never be enough nails in the wood.’ The ‘pseudo-Marxist’ Austrian art collective Total Refusal creates short films with visuals generated entirely from within popular video games. In Hardly Working, they train their focus on just a few of the hundreds of non-playable characters who populate the background in the western action-adventure game Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018). These often-seen, rarely scrutinised carpenters, laundresses, stable boys and street sweepers occupy a circular, uncanny reality centred on the repetitive tasks that hardly make a mark on the world around them. At first dryly humorous, the proceedings grow disquieting as the narrator prods the viewer to consider the ‘infinite loop of labour performance’ of life within a capitalist system.

The Lost Souls of Saturn – Reality @lostsoulsofsaturn is a multidisciplinary art project. Conceived by Seth Troxler and Phil Moffa, it has a rotating cast of additional collaborators combining music, imagery, and storytelling into an inextricably linked whole. Challenging the convention of ‘format’ in every sense, LSOS transmissions encompass recorded music, installation, video, augmented reality and live performance. The latest album release, ‘Reality’, is the next instalment of our ongoing collaboration with LSOS. Totems of mythology, science fiction and conspiracy are heavily distilled into a series of themes which run throughout the project. Continually playing with the viewer’s perception, these themes (or concepts) are embedded into different layers of the campaign, to be discovered and decoded. HS developed a full character set of imaginary hieroglyphics which form the basis of a series of alien inscriptions, placed onto hidden surfaces and artefacts. Presented as relics from the future, these artefacts are central to the cover art and campaign imagery. This coded language puzzle of symbols, glyphs and objects extends across the wider campaign in both digital and physical applications – creating a breadcrumb trail for fans and audience to decipher.
