Why I Celebrate When Competitors Copy Our Ideas There's a common misconception in business that seeing a competitor replicate your idea should cause concern. But let me tell you, it's quite the opposite. When another business adopts a concept we've pioneered, it's not a sign of weakness but a testament to our innovation's strength. Why do I say this? Because it means they've recognised the value and potential of what we're doing. It's a nod to our ingenuity and market insight. After all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, isn't it? Keeping a close eye on our competition is essential, but it's not about fretting over their every move. Instead, it's about staying informed and remaining agile in a constantly evolving market landscape. So, when I stumble upon a competitor who's taken a page from our playbook, do I feel threatened? Far from it. I find it rather amusing. It's validation that we're onto something big. It reaffirms our position as industry leaders and innovators. But here's the kicker: while it's okay to draw inspiration from others, it's crucial to maintain your own unique identity. We don't just replicate what others do; we refine and reimagine it to fit our vision and goals. That's the essence of true innovation. In the fast-paced business world, getting caught up in the competition is easy. But I firmly believe that the key to success lies in focusing on what we do best. By staying true to our strengths and vision, we continue to set the standard for excellence in our industry. So, the next time you catch wind of a competitor following in your footsteps, take it as a compliment. It's a sign that you're ahead of the curve and making waves in your industry. And remember, the best ideas are meant to be shared, adapted, and improved upon. That's how progress is made. #copycat #ihaveanidea #ifitworksuseit #businesssuccess #ideasthatwork

Thanks so much to Claudio Garcia and his colleagues at Outthinker Networks for giving me this opportunity to engage with members of their strategy and innovation roundtables. What a great group of people! In my scoping comments to kick off the session, I drew on content from two books I've co-authored, "No-Excuses Innovation: Strategies for Small- and Medium-Sized Mature Enterprises" and "Serial Innovators: How Individuals Create and Deliver Breakthrough Innovations in Mature Firms" both published by Stanford University Press.
Insights from our recent roundtable with Bruce Vojak, founder of Breakthrough Innovation Advisors, LLC and author of "No-Excuses Innovation: Strategies for Small- and Medium-Sized Mature Enterprises" and "Serial Innovators: How Individuals Create and Deliver Breakthrough Innovations in Mature Firms." Bruce led a discussion with members on how to effectively advocate for innovation within your organization and skillfully navigate the intricate political landscape that often impedes progress.
