#NewsAnalysis: On October 25, an early morning Israeli airstrike on southeast Lebanon targeted an area far away from combat-zone, a site known for its camping of journalists. The strike killed three journalists in the compound, leaving several others injured as they slept. The incident surprised many as the rare airstrike hit an area that has been used by the press as a base for covering the war. ⚡ On the second anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR) underscores its unwavering support for Ukrainian journalists. In the past two years, Ukrainian media workers have shown immense courage and resilience, risking their safety to report on the war's atrocities. We echo the call for international solidarity and support to address safety threats and economic challenges. Russia must be held accountable for attacks on journalists, with at least 11 fatalities and 34 injuries to date. While direct attacks decreased in 2023, journalists on the front lines still face significant risks. https://lnkd.in/ewvJqUaz

Reading the well covered Pinochet dictatorship in Chile the official reports are that 3000 people were killed or executed and internment of 80,000 and toture of 10s of thousands in over 17 years. Comparing that with what Israel has done in Gaza and to Palestinians civilians in 4-5 months is grandest atrocity and genocide beside destruction of habitats, water, Electric, roads , and hospital facilities unseen in the whole history of the world . We must underestimate that this rogue nation in out of control and needs help and force to save herself and the Palestinians and may be the world from a larger disaster.
“In Gaza, the number of journalists and media workers killed — 78 — has surpassed the total around the world in all of 2022, data from the Committee to Protect Journalists shows. It has already overtaken the number killed in the two-decade conflict in Afghanistan. And it has exceeded the toll for the deadliest year of the Iraq War for journalists.

Two years after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, MFRR stands in solidarity with Ukrainian journalists still under threat: https://buff.ly/3IaY5UM Ukrainian journalists must be able to work in a safe and free environment. This is why today, we call for continued international support for Ukrainian media, as well as for this support to address both the safety threats from Russia’s military and the economic crisis wrought by the war. Over the past years, Ukraine's media community has demonstrated incredible courage and resilience in covering the horrors of this war for their communities and the outside world, often at great personal sacrifice. We also repeat our demand for Russia to comply with international humanitarian law and refrain from all attacks on journalists. Authorities must investigate the numerous cases in which its forces are likely responsible for such attacks, including as potential war crimes.

Amid escalating civil war in #Sudan, #journalists face increasing threats, assaults, and internet disruptions from both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. The International Federation of Journalists reported 15 trapped journalists, highlighting a wider pattern of attacks, arrests, and intimidation. This #media assault has also led to challenges in accessing reliable information for civilians, exacerbated by #internet blockages and power outages. Today marks the #InternationalDayinsupportofPalestinianJournalists – a day nominated by the International Federation of Journalists to show solidarity with their Palestinian counterparts. According to the Federation, 102 journalists and media workers have been killed since the war broke out, 95 of them Palestinians, in what UN experts have described as the “most dangerous conflict for journalists in recent history”. That figure, horrifying as it is, pales in comparison to the growing number of Palestinians killed by Israel over the past few months, which is expected to pass 30,000 this week – almost as many as the number of Ukrainian soldiers who have been killed in the two years since Russia’s invasion, where the number of civilian casualties is far lower. The Israeli government is pressing ahead with plans to attack Rafah – the southern border town where an estimated 1.5 million displaced Palestinians are sheltering – despite gentle admonishments from its allies, in what feels like the most dystopian of groundhog days. When, if ever, is the Australian government going to take a proper stand against this genocide? https://lnkd.in/gJZn-4r2

A country, an administration, a media outlet, an educational institute that cannot define and distinguish between “male” and “female”, or the basic soundness of a proposition like 1+1=2, or that legalize crimes (in California it’s okay to steal up to $1000), or cannot distinguish between “journalism” and “terrorism” - are not in a position to determine what constitutes right from wrong or what “genocide” is https://lnkd.in/es2Q9zAW

The job of a war correspondent is invaluable. They risk their lives to report stories about the military conflict, its aftermath, and the people affected. ▪ To shed light on this work, last year we spoke with Nastya Stanko, a prominent Ukrainian war journalist, who has been covering Russia’s aggression against Ukraine since 2014, and returned to being a full-time war reporter in 2022. She now serves as the chief editor of the investigative outlet Slidstvo.info. ▪ In 2022 and early 2023, Stanko reported for hromadske from Bakhmut, Kherson, Izyum, Kupyansk, Lyman, and other hotspots of the Russo-Ukrainian war. Her planning process for a trip to the frontline could take up to a week, and the team published approximately three reports after each trip. ▪ Coordinating with the military press officers is the most time-consuming aspect of her work, which involves planning and finalising materials. Transcribing the materials also takes a lot of time – she prefers to do it herself to ensure accuracy. ▪ The work is intense during shoots, often starting at 4-5 AM, and sometimes requiring spending nights in military shelters. Stanko recounts staying in a basement with the military for three nights to avoid attracting attention. ▪ At the frontline, she usually left early, coordinating with the military to pick her team up from the agreed location and take them to their positions. They shoot for the whole day and sometimes at night if there’s enough lighting. ▪ To Stanko, it is essential to share these stories so that people are aware of the reality. Despite the challenges and risks involved, Stanko feels when reporting from the frontline she is doing what she does best and hopes her work makes a difference. ▪ According to Stanko, war journalists must be prepared to invest time, understand the military structure, manage limitations and obstacles, update information continuously, develop skills and experience gradually, and know the local communication system. 📍 Learn more about Stanko’s previous role and the challenges associated with it in the full article 👉 https://lnkd.in/dbmrnihh
